williehayesjr Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 Can someone please help me with defeating the Mig 31. No matter what I do, he seems to eventually get me. What is a good defense that could turn into a good offense?
Hellfire257 Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 The missiles it carries are not the best. This means you can either loiter at the edge of their range and let him waste them all or just dodge them as they come if you think you're up to it.
williehayesjr Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 I always loose at BVR; I have never gotten close enough to dog fight. According to one of the previous post, I should try to outrun the missile, i.e, when it is fired on me, I should turn tail (180 degrees). Is that the best strategy? By the way, what are those missiles and how many can a Mig 31 carry?
SyntaxError Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 (edited) I'd reckon do a 90 degree turn instead of running away. It's never good to put the enemy behind you. Flying sideways allows you to keep visual on the area the bogey is in while you evade the missile with a climb/decent. The DCS World Mig-31 carries the R-33 which is semi active & R-40T/R, both long range missiles. So on second thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to exit the Mig's radar lock range. Just be careful not to make yourself open to an IR attack. williehayesjr Posted March 22, 2014 Author Posted March 22, 2014 Since I am fired upon, at least 30 miles out, heat seekers should not be a problem even if I do a 180; secondly, putting the bandit to my 6/9, in order to keep him in sight, is superfluous at 30 or so miles out. I guess a 180 turn is sufficient until I learn to dodge the missile. By the way, the 180 turn worked 5 out of 5 times since I've tried it today.
Zabuzard Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 (edited) The first missile is pretty easy to evade with a 3/9 o'clock ride (90° turn). You can then fly up and down while being on missiles 3/9 o'clock this will bleed her energy off. Most times your enemy will shoot another missile when he sees your maneuver. It's very important to know where the enemy is which isn't easy when you fly 90° because you easy loose the radar lock. Only when you know where the enemy is you can position yourself good for the next missile. If you have visual contact with the missile you can also fly straight towards her and break away in the last moment. You should fire own missiles to the enemy to prevent beign shoot at another time, cause him problems like he did to you. As training you can equip him with 2 radar missiles and yourself only with IR missiles. Try to get close to him and evade the 2 missiles. Don't be frustrated if you need some time, this is hard and often you can't escape a missile even if you've done all right! They're made to hit even aces :D €: For training I'd recommend to put on the labels, with that you can analyse the behaviour of the missiles and the enemy. For combat analysation I recommend the program TavView which records your flight and then helps with powerfull tools to analyse all what happend (take a look on it at YT or so :]) Edited March 23, 2014 by Zabuza

hvymtal Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 (edited) I would keep turning in various directions perpendicular to the missile, dumping chaff at various points and leaving ECM off, as once they lock on its no longer useful. If you can sneak into VR, they won't stand a chance even if you're flying a B-1R; the best close-range weapons they have are R60s I think and they have shit TWR and can only pull 5 G's The only thing that you can fight them with BVR is another 31, the F-14 or the 120D, none of which we can use Edited March 23, 2014 by hvymtal My Logitech Extreme3D Pro "Essentials" Profiles for FC3 and 25T: https://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/files/599930/ Thrustmaster T.16000M, TWCS FC3, F-5E, M2000C, AJS-37, C-101, F-14, NTTR
