I've noticed that when you're tracking a moving target and then lose tracking the Shkval will continue moving at the same speed and direction as the target was. This is convenient if the target is still moving in the same speed and direction but if the target has changed direction it can make it very difficult to reacquire the target. I would think that lasing the ground would cause the shkval to ground stabilize but this isn't the case. is there anyway other way to stabilize onto the ground without having to reset the targeting system?

It should be possible to stop tracking of "imaginary" moving target the same way as tracking of normal target can be stopped: press and hold lock, then slew Shkval. This is what my muscle memory tells me when I try to imagine the situation.

I had the exact same thought! Decided not to post it in case it was wrong. But I'll gladly corroborate your post cause my muscle memory tells me the same thing!

Hi there, previous posts are correct, the quickest most reliable method of stopping an unwanted "wandering shkval camera view" targeting motion is to click and re-position with the (HMS) Helmet Mounted Sight, an alternative method would be, select/lock an object (preferably a easily recognisable object like a building) using the slew control & target lock command, it will partially override the auto tracking allowing you to influence the destination of the designator reticule.

The down side of using the "target lock" button is that the shkval may fail to recognise an object simply continuing to "wander" with each click you are reducing the serviceable time left on your laser optics.

Finally it is as well to note that recent changes/patches have resulted in the shkval targeting system becoming much more sensitive to any atmospheric disturbances such as rain, snow, low light levels and most significantly mist/fog. So much so that targeting locks are now becoming a very frustrating pursuit that in order to avoid the frustration I almost exclusively use manual target guidance. This requires a clear understanding of target lead and ballistics but adds to your skills.

I hope this is useful to you.

This is something i had noticed as well and, frankly, i find it tremendously annoying. It's gotten to the point where i can clearly, painfully obviously, see the desired target with very clear contrast lines between it and the surrounding environment, and the shkval will still fail to establish a proper lock.

Combine this with the fact that the range likes to reset itself to .5km and send the shkval slewing away in the opposite direction of the helicopter's motion at warp factor nine.....

Hi ShuRugal

I completely sympathise with your irritation at the way the beloved KA is undergoing changes that are probably unrealistic, I have a theory about this, I think that a lot of inconsistency in behaviour is because the coders at DCS are implementing changes in preparation for the EDGE graphics. These changes are producing undesireable performance errors in the less capable graphics engine we are using just now but that with EDGE and some optimisation work it will all be returned to best performance that we all know and love. I hope this proves to be the case because I will certainly not want to continue to fly the shark if the current performance is to be the ongoing accepted standard.

ogerman i hope you are right, but i know one issue that still hasnt been fixed and its basically a 2 minute fix, for the ka-50s custom skins, so that other people dont see it as bright orange.

The hud not being fixable has been in the game for how many years now? I find it hard to believe that its that hard to fix.

the shkval has been driving me crazy, especially the .5km thing, Shurugal explained, which has even caused the aircraft to plummet nose first into the ground, when going in low and fast hunting sams.

well at least ED is going to fix one thing with the ka-50, maybe next patch well get a fix for something bigger.
