Out of the blue question.

Does anyone know what the front dogtooth on the LERX is used for (The rear is used for the RHAW) in the MiG-29A?

If you aim for the sky, you will never hit the ground.

Couldn't find a good picture of what you mean, but tooths on the wings are generally used for diverting spanwise (lengthwise) flow over and under the wing.

I think he might be referring to the forward antenna radome on the LERX by the intakes. Without delving into the intricacies of the MiG-29's avionics architecture, I assume it is a forward receiver for the RWR.

Truly superior pilots are those that use their superior judgment to avoid those situations where they might have to use their superior skills.

I don't recall that being an actual dogtooth. Not a lot of functionality that would have on a vortex-generating root segment.

Sorry, I was referring to the shape of the thing, not its aerodynamic functionality.

Essentially, there are two compartments forward on the MiG-29's LERX. The rearward one is used for the radar warning equipment, but I have no idea what the forward one usually houses.

If I can remember well, two ,the smaller ones, are part of the radar homing and warning system, the L006-LM/101 SIRENA-3.

And the other two, the larger ones, are part of the SO-69 type K-11E ECM active jammer.

I get this info some time ago from this great dissection of the anatomy of the Mig29, credited to Mr.Tartar
