Oscar Juliet Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 (edited) A friend of mine and myself have been enjoying the new AFM of the F-15 and have started to learn the radar and weapon systems. There are a few random issues that we are having that we cannot explain and seem to happen on any mission with multiple enemy aircraft. The screenshot below was taken after cruising in BVM mode and seeing enemy contacts on my RWR screen. These bars appeared to be on one location and if I turned away from them they would disappear. This happened before on another mission over an airfield. I'm not sure if this matters but it can be noted that the blue bullseye that is on the map was in this area. This second screen shot was taken after I was behind two enemy aircraft and had them showing on TWS mode. When I hit enter as I normally do and have successfully done to bug them this is what happened. Even after shutting off radar and repeating the process this is what happened. It can be noted that when I closed more distance between us I was able to bug them as normal. The issue ceased. My friend and I continued to fly the mission and shot down enemy aircraft with our 120s and Aim 9s without issue. It was just these random issues that popped up for us that we want answered. Several times we have also observed that aircraft will disappear in midflight. They will NOT crash they just vanish. This is confirmed with aircraft view mode and the map view mode. We saw this happen today with two aircraft we were shooting down. One was shot down the other did an evasive turn and disappeared. He was watching it. I've also watched SU-25t's take of from Batumi and disappear. Edited April 13, 2014 by Oscar Juliet My Youtube Channel

See "Home On Jam (HOJ) Mode" in FC3 manual page 109. Note "HOJ" in the bottom-left corner of the VSD.
lunaticfringe Posted April 13, 2014 Posted April 13, 2014 Those bars are indicators of jamming. You'll note that the indicator on the scope in the lower right corner says "HOJ"; you've locked onto a jamming signal in STT. If you are in BVR (RWS) mode and have an AIM-120 selected, you will see a TD box and an HOJ indication. Once you reach burn through range, the track will become the standard bugged marker.
Oscar Juliet Posted April 13, 2014 Author Posted April 13, 2014 Awesome! Thank you gentlemen. I thought the enemy might be doing something to cause this. When you say reach burn range and it will become normal does that mean their jamming capabilities only work when I'm farther away from them but when I get close it isn't going to help? Oscar Juliet Posted April 13, 2014 Author Posted April 13, 2014 Alright one question down. Still at hand is the Aliens coming down and zapping planes from the air. :P Random times AI planes in the air will vanish. My Youtube Channel
Zabuzard Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 (edited) If playing online that issue is known and belongs to connection speed problems etc. If not playing online check your graphic settings maybe thats because it must save some ressources for performance. Jamming belongs to electronic countermeasurements (ECM) which is a system an aircraft can carry with it to jam your radar. If ECM is activated it hides the distance of the aircraft but gives away its heading so one can detect it earlier but doesn't know the distance. If you lock on a jamming target you can shoot a missile which then flys in HOJ (home on jam) mode which means it simply flys in that direction till it finds someone. The problem is that you must guess the distance to the enemy and it can happen that you shoot missiles but the enemy is too far away for the missile to reach him. If youre getting closer to the jamming enemy your radar is strong enough to "burn trough" the jamming, then all is normal and you can use your radar as if he wouldn't jam. Jamming can also confuse missiles own radar system sometimes but if one is flying stealth attacks or wants to hide in a close dogfight you shouldn't use ECM because it gives away your position (heading only). Another disadvantage of ECM is that an enemys RWR will light you up much earlier because the ECM "signal" is sth like stronger than your normal radar "signal". Hope that helps :) Edited April 14, 2014 by Zabuza
