Fuel indicator / electical system not working as it should?

Hi everyone,

I always found it strange that when you start up the Huey according to the Check lists, that you are not able to check your Fuel until later in the Checklist when the engine is always running. I thought the fuel indicator should show how much fuel you have before you start the engines and right after you turn on the battery.

Today I´ve found a nice startup video of a Huey. You cannot read the dials, but if the instrument layout is like in DCS, then the fuel gauge seems to show the fuel level even before he is turning on the battery. So even earlier than I anticipated.

I know that the Huey is out of Beta, but I hope that such minor things can be changed / fixed (like the engine governor issue I posted earlier in this section).

What do you guys think?

Edit: I see that the Battery voltage is shown also before he flips the first switch which makes me wonder if it really was the Battery switch or something else he turned on there. Maybe the Battery was on already when he started recording the Video and the switch he flipped was the DC Power switch?

Edit2: In the comments the Pilot sais that he is indeed switching on the Battery at 0:03 in the video. So I wonder why the Battery Voltage and Fuel indicator are showing values with the Battery off :-/

The fuel gauge uses AC power from the inverter. You're supposed to turn the inverter on once the engine is at idle, per the checklist. Though you can turn the inverter on before that and things will work, draining your battery faster of course. I'm not sure if this is how it is in the real thing though.

Yup, one can do that (and I do that on Multi Player sometimes to check fuel before I do a startup). I´m just surprised that the fuel gauge in the Huey in the Video seems to show something before he even turns on the battery and especially before he turns on the inverter. And the inverter alone does nothing when the battery switch is off, right?

And when flipping the inverter in the DCS Huey, the instruments for Oil Pressure get active. When you watch the Video, he seems to turn on the Inverter after the Startup, because that´s where for him also the Oil Pressure gets shown on the instruments. But the Fuel gauge is on long before that. So it must be triggered by something else and not the inverter, right?

Or maybe the Huey shown in the Video just has a different wiring for the fuel gauge? With all those additional screens, GPS etc, maybe they modified all of that a bit.

Probably depends on what version the Huey is..

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Maybe. I did some reading in an Army Checklist for the UH1-H. And in the Checklist, the first time "Check Fuel Gauge" is mentioned is indeed after the engine is started and the inverter is turned on. So they really do seem to start the turbine before even checking if there´s fuel. Well... not a problem. When there´s no fuel, it won´t start anyway :P
