It's not a bug... we always have these reports about the Mustang. These engines have a booster coil that works like a battery type ignition. But it works only if a starter engaged. Generally this type of ignition has retarded timing to help start the engine.

The engine wouldn't start if mags weren't on. However, once the engine is started and you turned off the mags the engine should shut down since there is no longer a spark being made. The mags provide the spark. My experience though IRL ranges from single and multi-engine piston aircraft.
