NY3D Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 I have noticed that the SU-30 and the SU-27 are very similar if not identical with the exception of the extra seat in the SU-30 as the most obvious difference. My question is what is this aircraft's role ? Interceptor like the F-14 Tomcat??? Or is the extra seat for training purposes only,I was thinking that one flies the aircraft while the other searches and engages targets. Is this correct ?
Force_Feedback Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 Yes, the two pilots are to reduce workload. The Su-30 was designed as a command aircraft in a flight. The Su-30 has a "hump", because of the extra seat, has bigger vertical stabs (and there are differences per modification, some have angled or straight edges). Here is a site, which has all the su-27 variants on it. http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/flankers_pages/su-27_variants.html#Su-30K Also, the su-30 was to have extended A-G capabilities, but soon evolved into a multirole interceptor that can be tailor made for the customer. 1 Creedence Clearwater Revival:worthy:
Cobra360 Posted March 11, 2006 Posted March 11, 2006 The Su-30 and all two seat Flankers have slightly taller tail fins some are flat or cropped depending on the version and operator. The tall tail flat top is also fitted to the Su-35 as standard.

Yes the original Su-30 was designed as a dedicated interceptor and, as force_feedback said, mission controller with a secondary role as training asset. The original designation was "Su-27PU", where the "-PU" is an abbreviation for the Russian term for "interceptor trainer". System wise it is very similar to the single seat Su-27 and twin-seat Su-27UB ("UB" for "combat trainer") - well it is essentially an Su-27UB with added inflight refueling- and extended data-linking capabilities. The later multirole variations over the Su-30 - the Su-30MK, Su-MKI and Su-MKK have much more advanced systems but are also individually very different from each other. Cheers, - JJ. JJ
