Huge load times on non-steam dcs vs steam dcs

I recently switched from a steam install to non steam. And the load times basically exploded. On steam the load time into the main menu after the first start is max 10 seconds. However on non-steam it is up to a minute.

 

Could this be the copy protection getting in the way or checking files? Because it really sucks having the load time increase 4-6x after going on the supposedly less cumbersome non steam installation.

Did you install the steam version on a different drive?

No, it is the same drive.

assuming you reinstalled it on a hard drive, did you first run chkdisk and defrag before you reinstalled, and then another defrag pass after?

both versions are essentially the same.

I'd make sure to check the HD, maybe it suffers from a couple of bad sectors. There shouldn't be any differences in loading times between the Steam and non-Steam versions.
