Byeohazard Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 You don't need gyro for bombs or rockets. .. Thanks Holbeach! I will take a gander through the manual to clarify the gyro. Would you be able to enlighten me on its usefulness and your experience with when to use it and when not to? I believe it is used with the gun in AA combat? Thanks!
Hadwell Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 The gyro is used for unguided rockets and the gun, the asp is supposed to use the radar for range finding apparently but that function doesn't seem to be working so you need to manually set the range and wingspan to use the pipper to shoot, more convinient to use the fixed net X and just lead the target like in the 109 My youtube channel Remember: the fun is in the fight, not the kill, so say NO! to the AIM-120. I am pretty sure it was the bombing tutorial that threw me off..I could have sworn that it made me put the bombs in gyro...I will revisit it. I am playing with s-24A and s-24B rockets ..so far I have done ok without the gyro but I do believe they are unguided so I will give the gyro a whirl with them. Thanks again!
PiedDroit Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 (edited) The gyro is used for unguided rockets and the gun The manual is not very specific regarding the employment of the gyro for A-G Page 143 you can readNote: You can try to engage targets using the ASP in GYRO mode (CU19). When you turn on GYRO mode, press and hold ENTER key to pacify the pipper. Place the pipper just below the target: you can either release ENTER or continue to hold. Try both approaches. If the pipper looks to jumpy for you, switch ASP back to MSL mode.EDIT: note that in the manual, MSL (CU13) refers to the GUN-MSL switch, NOT the MSL-GYRO switch (CU19). According to this I use MSL for guided missiles and GYRO for everything else, which works pretty well. Edited July 9, 2015 by PiedDroit

You don't "need" the gyro on bomb, rocket, or gun use, but you can use it if you prefer. I don't use gyro or radar on any A/G work and it wasn't used on any of these demo attacks. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=144681 As for A/A gunnery, I would prefer gyro, but again you don't have to. .. Seems like the gyro is "a matter of taste" on weather to use or not. Your videos inspired me to try "bombs with parachutes"!! I am hitting specific targets. Lots of fun! Trying to figure out how to come in as level and fast as you..I seem to still have to dive a bit. Not nearly as much as what I was doing before (dive bombing)wo the chutes. Is there a specific way to set up for a level and low approach? Thanks!!
Holbeach Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 I can't see why the gyro is used for static targets as its purpose is for prediction on deflection shots as in A/A gunnery. I find the manual confusing, luckily I didn't read it before doing these vids. Have the sight in auto and let it do the work for you. Use the A/P to maintain height and go as low as possible to get accuracy. Set the lower outer ring as your pipper to allow for the parachute drag and also allow for the release delay. Always use FAB 250-M54-TU. Practice a lot. GL. .. ASUS 2600K 3.8. P8Z68-V. ASUS ROG Strix RTX 2080Ti, RAM 16gb Corsair. M2 NVME 2gb. 2 SSD. 3 HDD. 1 kW ps. X-52. Saitek pedals. ..

When you say set the lower outer ring do you mean that I need to slide the pipper up a bit with the angular scale/intercept angle knob adjustment so that it is in view and then put it back into auto and then sight with the bottom of the pipper ?
PiedDroit Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 (edited) I can't see why the gyro is used for static targets as its purpose is for prediction on deflection shots as in A/A gunnery. Actually no, the gyro takes your own attitude and momentum in account and is used as input to compute the piper position. The deflection itself is computed with something else, which is using the gyro data as input (plus distance to target). Try this: setup ground mode / asp gun mode. In gyro mode, roll left and right slowly and watch your piper. Redo this in MSL mode. In MSL mode the piper is locked in the horizontal plane, so if you're not perfectly straight the aim won't be as accurate. ----- In short, using the gyro will help increasing your accuracy in all configurations but it can be too jumpy so you might need to use the MSL mode which is not as accurate but much more stable. Use the sight in auto at all times and without gyro (or with if you wish, it will make no difference). This contains the basic ballistic info and will set the pipper deflection accordingly. Then use the wingspan adjuster and set it to a diameter to allow for the parachute and use the lower part as your new pipper. This will be found by T & E. as will the amount required for release delay. Try it at 900 kph, 60 m AGL, S & L, full wingspan for a start and go on from there. .. Byeohazard Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 thanks for all the advise! I have downloaded a practice map and have been putting some practice in. I have tried some cluster bombs also! Oddly, the cluster bombs do not seems to damage the targets that are enveloped in its wrath. When the dust settles the units just drive around. Maybe a map setting or I am doing something wrong.

Byeohazard Posted July 22, 2015 Posted July 22, 2015 (edited) I have returned! I have now moved on to rocket practice. I seem to be rather inaccurate with them. I am trying to use them ina S&L approach rather than in a dive. I seem to overshoot quite often. I approach at about 200 feet or so try and get the reticule on a target and launch. I have the switches in Unc (down) Shoot (up) and auto (up). Ground attack. shooting 4 rockets at a time. The tutorial instructs to dive but I figured if I can S&L bomb with FAB-250 M35 TU perhaps I can do the same with rockets? Pepper a runway full of soft targets for instance. ANy advice? Oh just viewd Holbeach's rocket video....back to the field! Edited July 22, 2015 by Byeohazard

Oh just viewd Holbeach's rocket video....back to the field! Welcome back. As you have already found out, rockets need to be used in a dive. The S5 M rocket is meant for light armour and soft targets, but if you concentrate enough on one spot you can kill a tank, in this case a T-72. .. ASUS 2600K 3.8. P8Z68-V. Byeohazard Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 (edited) Thanks Holbeach! I have had some moderate success with the s5M on light armored targets as well as limited success on parked air craft. I've faired a bit better with the s24B I'm running a stock mission that equips me with cluster bombs however no joy so far....I am trying to come in on a dive instead of S&L and I do get the pipper on target..I have a feeling I'm releasing from too low or wrong angle/distance....any advice for the cluster bombs when diving?....I have used them sparingly so far with some success on S&L.. Diving is providing a good challenge! Edited July 23, 2015 by Byeohazard
