Zakatak Posted September 26, 2014 Posted September 26, 2014 No, I am not joking. Nintendo is releasing a new 3DS which is quite literally called the "New 3DS" (why would you think this is a good idea?!). Here is what it looks like: It adds a few new features to the original. The CPU is more powerful, the screen size was increased for the smaller version, a second set of shoulder triggers were added to the back, a motion sensor that detects acceleration, a "c-stick" was added to the right side, and the camera is specifically designed to track the viewers eyes. That last feature is to ensure the 3D effect functions at most viewing angles. The stylus is still present for the touchscreen of course. Internal storage is small, but microSD cards go up to 128Gb these days so it isn't much of a problem. While you certainly couldn't with the old one, I think the new version has enough functions to make a fun little on-the-go study sim (more emphasis on study than flying given the control scheme) which is pretty rare since the genre is one of the most difficult to make mobile. Obviously it would be inferior to PC gaming in a lot of ways, but you can use a 3DS anywhere and anytime. The camera should be fine for head tracka ala TrackIR, and the stylus can let you zoom in on certain panels to operate various switches and buttons, and all the physical buttons on the device should be enough for more commonly used/HOTAS functions. You could add lots of cool little gimmicks too, like flipping through pages on your kneeboard, drawing on your map, operating an E6B whiz wheel, doing pre-flight checks, ejecting by gripping all triggers with both hands and yanking the device upwards, etc. Here's just an idea for a 3rd/4th gen military aircraft control scheme: Thumbstick - pitch (up/down) and roll (left/right) C-stick - throttle position (up/down) differential braking (left/right) L/R triggers - rudder/nosewheel position ZL/ZR triggers - weapon pickle and gun trigger A/B/X/Y buttons - D-pad mode (slew control, system management, communications, countermeasures) D-pad - functions depend on above Start - pause menu Select - reset head tracking Stylus - everything else (radio freqs, kneeboard, gear, MFD, de-icing, etc)
Corrigan Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 I think it'd sell 35 copies. Win10 x64 | SSDs | i5 2500K @ 4.4 GHz | 16 GB RAM | GTX 970 | TM Warthog HOTAS | Saitek pedals | TIR5
Zakatak Posted September 27, 2014 Author Posted September 27, 2014 I think it'd sell 35 copies. Oh I am sure something like that would be a financial flop. Unless maybe they called it a sequel to Pilot Wings 64 and had a variable realism and difficulty options, so it can play like an arcade game.
