taps Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I thought modern synthetic aperture radars were able to overcome such problems: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_F-35#mediaviewer/File:F-35_SAR.jpg Or will this only become possible with F-35?
Bushmanni Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 I don't think you can do CAS with SAR alone as it doesn't tell difference between friend and foe. DCS Finland: Suomalainen DCS yhteisö -- Finnish DCS community -------------------------------------------------- SF Squadron
taps Posted September 29, 2014 Author Posted September 29, 2014 Considering this map: it shouldn't be to difficult to find out which artillery pieces belong to ISIS based on their location? Does YPG have any artillery anyway?
Bushmanni Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 CAS is by definition engagement of enemies close to friendly units. If there's no danger of mix-up then the mission type would be called interdiction. Eddie Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Even SAR can't pick out dismounted infantry, or tell the difference between a non-combatant driving to work and a pickup truck full or insurgents. If you're flying into a kill box and shooting anything "tank" shaped then yes SA/GM/GMT RADAR can do the job. If civilian casualties etc is a concern then you need Mk1 eyeball or TGP etc. CAS is by definition engagement of enemies close to friendly units. If there's no danger of mix-up then the mission type would be called interdiction. Actually a mission being CAS or Air Interdiction is not determined by proximity to friendly forces, but by whether or not the mission involves coordination with friendly ground units. You could be dropping ordnance across the street from friendlies (extreme example used to illustrate the point), but if you're not talking to/coordinating with them then it's air interdiction, and not CAS.
