B52EW Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 First post the forum! I've been flying the Campaign missions and I had question regarding cruising speeds. The jet seems to be a hog when loaded with stores. At 16,000ft with the throttle at 95% it seems to hang out around 600 to 650 km/h at a pretty decent AOA to maintain lvl flight. Just wanted to make sure this is normal and that I'm not flying wrong. I don't see how I could be, it just seems a little slow to me, and feel like I am burning up fuel like crazy. Thanks!
xxJohnxx Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 If I am not misstaken, you are expering the backside of the powercurve. Your AoA is so high, that you can't accelerate any further, which leaves you flying in a nose-up high drag config. Try to use the afterburner to accelerate to a 1000km/h indicated airspeed. Once you reached that speed, throttle back to about 95%, and you should end up crusing at a speed of 900km/h to 970km/h. QuiGon Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 (edited) According to the manual on page 14 cruising speed for the MiG-21 should be 800 km/h TAS and on page 84 it gives the following additional informations: -"Longest range speed: 650-600km/h IAS (decreases with altitude)" -"Longest flight duration speed: 480km/h IAS (doesn’t depend on altitude)" ... and welcome to the forums! Edited October 23, 2014 by QuiGon Intel i7-12700K @ 8x5GHz+4x3.8GHz + 32 GB DDR5 RAM + Nvidia Geforce RTX 2080 (8 GB VRAM) + M.2 SSD + Windows 10 64Bit DCS Panavia Tornado (IDS) really needs to be a thing!
B52EW Posted October 23, 2014 Author Posted October 23, 2014 Thanks for the info! I'll try what John said and see how it goes. I did notice it the cruising speed in the manual which is why I thought it was doing something wrong. Seems like I will get better range at the speed I have been flying through.
JorgeIII Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 As far as I remember from original MIG 21 manual: Max range IAS: aproximate 700 km/h. This value is almost independent from weight, loadout and altitud. Of course at the same ias range increases with altitud (aprox. 20 to 40% at 6000 m and 10000m, maybe moré). Max in air time IAS: around 480 km/h. This IAS value do varíes with different weight and altitudes. I posted the table somewhere. AKA TANGO-117. JorgeIII Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 In game at 6000 m you will need: 300 / 350 L / 100 km at 700 IAS (75-85% power) 1600 L / 100 km at max speed with AFT. A value in between with military (100%) power. I choose my speed based in fuel left, distance to go and objetives urgency. Always calculate your bingo. AKA TANGO-117. JorgeIII Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Making my post right: Max range speed (IAS): 690 km/h under 500m 620 km/h at 5000m 510 km/h at 10000m Max. endurance speed: 480 km/h Source: English mig-21bis export version manual. 1 AKA TANGO-117. Random Posted November 3, 2014 Posted November 3, 2014 Rather than use the emergency fuel dump to get your speed up try gently pushing the nose down to reduce AOA. At 95% rpm I was at 550IAS level. Nose down for a while speed up to 800IAS and stared to climb. Speed stayed there without any change in throttle and I quickly made up my lost altitude.
