Rangi Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 (edited) Hi all, I am looking into buying a new monitor for new gaming machine but dont know what will be best for DCS. I would like a 27" or 28" and am looking in the <$500 range but I'm more interested in value than a specific price. Is 120 or 144hz worth it or is a low (1-2ms) response time more important? Also is it worth going for 2560 x 1440 or 4k? I am happy enough with the resolution on my 23" 1920x1080 but am I really missing much? Any help appreciated. Demon_ Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 (edited) Less than 8ms is ok! (The refresh time of a 60Hz monitor is 16.6ms). Anyway, I've read that human eye can't really tell the difference below 12 ms. Manufactures measure their monitors response time a little differently and it makes it hard to use that as a spec to compare models with. In the end it is mostly driven by marketing. http://www.testufo.com/#test=mprt&background=FFFF80&foreground=000000&size=12&thickness=1&pursuit=0&ppf=12 Here a video of the U2412m vs a CRT: You can notice slight ghosting but overall the response time itself seems good when compared to the quickness of a CRT. 120-144hz monitor? Your video card can run 120FPS? Maybe you should upgrade the CPU platform. Edited October 26, 2014 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.

vicx Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Look up Nvidia G-sync. A 4K G-sync monitor is probably an ideal monitor for flight-sims. Still maybe wait till Edge is out before committing to anything. Edge might be more taxing on hardware than people are hoping.

Yeah I will be waiting for EDGE I just started to do all the learning stuff with monitors as I have not really paid much attention to them before. Will take me a while to work out what is marketing hype and what actually makes a difference to image quality. Thanks for the replys guys. So is it worth the extra cash for 2560x1440 or even 4k? Also I should have said I will be upgrading PC at same time, probably to 4690K and gtx 970 based system. PC: 6600K @ 4.5 GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX 970, 32" 2K monitor.

xaoslaad Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 (edited) I have an Asus PB287Q 28" 4k driven by 2x eVGA NVIDIA GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0 It's beautiful, but all those pixels take a lot to drive. With a little tuning I am getting acceptable frame rates (usually 40+ into the 70's), but they still dip sometimes, even with the two cards driving it. The only problem is DCS fonts do not scale so they are very small, which becomes noticeable in places like the multiplayer server menu. Labels in game are hard to spot and very difficult to read and I have not found a way to adjust them anywhere. For what it's worth Windows 8.1 scaled perfectly. I didn't have to fiddle with anything. I hear this is one of the things it does VERY well over Windows 7, but I have never tried 4k with Windows 7. A bigger monitor like ///Rage is looking at will certainly make fonts more readable, so that's one way around it :) Edited October 31, 2014 by xaoslaad
*Rage* Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Yeah I personally wouldnt bother with 4k at less than 40-42". Anything less and I'd stick with 1600p. I currently run a 30". [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 64th "Scorpions" Aggressor Squadron Discord: 64th Aggressor Squadron TS: 195.201.110.22
xaoslaad Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I wouldn't necessarily say don't bother, but consider that if you're looking at smaller you should probably be running Windows 8.1 or better unless you're willing to accept that you'll need to mess with icon sizes and fonts. Regardless of screen size, also consider that you're probably going to need an SLI setup to play anything at 4k resolution. 3840x2160 is 4 times the pixels of 1920x1080 and I feel like two 970's is _barely_ enough. You certainly won't be maxing out DCS without even more. Most games seem to do just fine. The font thing I mentioned within DCS is the worst I've come across so far. I've done a fair bit of MWO since getting them and it's fine. IL2: BOS runs very well in all regards so far. If you do go 4k do make sure you get a monitor that does at least 60Hz. 30 Hz monitors are supposed to be terrible for gaming. I think you'll find some people that say you should only get a 120Hz, but I don't notice anything wrong with 60Hz. I dual boot Fedora 20 and I had to do some work with the xorg.conf to get 60Hz, before which it was running 30 and it was pretty bleh even just using the desktop. Then I had to do the font/icon scaling, which was not hard, but probably similar to what needs to be done for Windows 7 and older. Things aren't perfect for 4k yet, but they're not terrible either. And they yield some pretty gaming.
