Thanks for the advice. Since the AWACS channel is often not configured on a lot of online missions it's been a struggle finding targets lol. Everytime I get a hit on the rwr I get my hopes up and it turns out to be a Sam.

That is a problem as the defaults are not identical between AWACS and Mig, so it makes it rare to see them set up to be compatible.

[shameless_plug]The Australian hosted AEF Playground public server is a free engagement server and the Mig-21 radios work with the AWACS on both sides. AWACS coverage is intentionally a bit patchy to make life interesting.[/shameless_plug]

I don't test for bugs, but when I do I do it in production.

Are enemies still visible on the F10 map? Kinda makes AWACS superfluous.

No, I currently maintain the mission and setting it to allies only was one of the first things I did. I'd personally prefer f10 showing nothing at all, but it is still a training server as well and needs to cater to that too. It's free fire now as well, the bases of the respective sides have SAM cover so those wanting to train just have to make sure they don't wander outside the reservation. The weather also gets changed every few days or so.

There actually got my first online kill in the mig21. Right off the bat too on the 104th. Took off from maykop, barely flew out, kept the radar off until I looked up and saw an f15, locked him, he tried to evade a little and then down he went.

Good kill! I've only ever gotten one F-15 on the 104th. TBH I was as surprised as he was- I got him on radar at a range of around 10km in the mountains and got a shot off before he could respond.

The rest of my victims have been unsuspecting A-10s... unless you count a guy who spun his F-15 into the ocean while in a guns-only dogfight with me on the TOG Bar and Grill server (I don't count it as kill, but it was a memorable fight for sure).

Thanks, I don't see myself leaving the mig21 anytime soon. Kills may be rarer but it's so much more fun to fly and it feels like a much bigger achievement lol. First session that I flew the f15 online I got 3 kills. Took 4 or 5 sessions to nail down some decent tactics with the mig21 and the help of everyone in this thread (I've read most of it lol). I have not gone after any a10cs yet, but I think I should try that soon.

Also, I think the crashing guy counts, it was probably because you cause him to panic :p

A10 is tricky one, shot two R-13M1 and it was still flyable, finally R60m nailed it lol

for A-10s, don't fire from directly behind, try 35% or more of an angle, you want to knock off a wing not hit the engine nacelles, since they'er really separate from the plane itself...

so it's not really the plane that's too tough, but the fact that the engines are really a separate entity.

There is always the option of the cannon, which will generally bring down A-10s with one burst (cannon kills also make you look like a badass).

If anyone is having trouble with the guns pipper only moving in the vertical axis, I discovered that the trick is to flip the little black lever near the fixed grid brightness knob to the bottom position. Doing so allows the pipper to move left and right around the ASP glass. If you're using manual mode, you also need to set the intercept angle to 'ГШ-23' on the knob or the bullets will pass below the target :(.

Good tip, thanks.

Yeah you mean Missile-Gyro lever. At the moment ASP doesn't work correctly, but it is pretty accurate when using 300m fixed mode. I hope that 1.5 update finally fix all ASP related problems.

Got another 2 kills against modern fighters tonight so far on 104th. An f15 and an su27. Starting to get the hang of it, stay long watch the rwr, pop the radar on to get a quick picture and then lock the target fast if anything not friendly comes up. The su27 took my down at the same time but the f15 didn't see it coming.

My problem is, that almost no missions have an AWACS flying...

Without it it's hard to find the enemies, you will see a lot of RWR activity as most missions have atleast 325423095782430957 different SAM's all littered around for the A-10's to have fun with..

When I find someone, I can kill it, but in most of my engagements I find them, but they are head on with me and thus instantly fire an AMRAAM my way.

I can't go on the more popular servers like the 104th as it's out of region and it kicks me out for high ping :(

Ya without working AWACS it's definitely a lot harder. Especially since some servers have awacs but the radio channel just isn't configured, so other pilots in say, f15s will be able to use it, but you won't. I generally tend to just stay low and circle the bullseye until something pops on the rwr. Then I look around and try and get a visual. Head on is always going to end badly but unfortunately without AWACS, is going to occur fairly frequently and then...aim 120

If I spot them before they spot me, well they dead.

But if it works the other way around, me in trouble :joystick:

Ya pretty much, at that point all my focus is on losing the lock, and since they are generally out of range if they spot me first, finding them again too quickly I'll just be back in the same sticky situation.

Haha very nice

Actually I tried my luck yesterday night, flew several sorties and every single time the same scenario, RWR is clean, suddenly I got locked - I go evasive - and *bam*, AIM-120C

Well, except once where I took an R-27ER instead.

After seeing that video I realize I was coming in too high, making an laughably easy target Flush.gif

Yeah, I learned from Hadwell that the only way to fight modern fighters in a Mig 21 is to stay fast, low and with radar on - using the mountains to cover you from A-120Cs etc. Once you pick up an enemy contact lock him straight away, go full burner towards him, engage with R-3R at max range, then one inside the envelope, then switch to IR to finish him off.

Worst thing is I KNEW it - but I fly onPvP very rarely and I forget the basics - and I was also simply enjoying fliying the -21 :music_whistling:

Next time I'll remember that I need to switch my brain into terrain-hugging, ambushing bast*rd mode :D

At least I gave someone some easy kills.

Hmmm. Terrain hugging, ambushing bast*rd. Isn't that another name for a SAM site?

Oh god. We're becoming the thing that we hate most :D.

Speaking of terrain hugging, I cannot wait to tear a** through NTTR in this baby, NOE, killing some modern fighters!

And AWESOME job on that sortie! This bird is such a rush

Even in the Flanker, I wish people would fly a bit higher. There's no point in flying at 10km+ altitude when every other dude is flying at 10 metres above ground level.
