Chappie Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 So apparently back in April of this year, Su-24s (unarmed pair) were sent from Russia to intercept that ship in the Black Sea (international waters) and tell it to scoot because according to an agreement, if a country's shore is not washed by those waters, then don't overstay your welcome. Now of course the Donald Cook was in the Black Sea in an attempt to project power and intimidation because Russia annexed the Crimean Penninsula. Thus, in an effort to send that ship on its way, these unarmed Su-24s used a jammer pod known as "Kyblini" that shut down the AEGIS radar system as well as all target and weapon tracking. To add insult to injury, one of the aircraft then proceeded to conduct mock attacks on the ship twelve times flying within a thousand feet of the bow each time. That ship immediately set sail for Turkey and it was reported that the crew were demoralized unable to restart their radar and felt like sitting ducks so they issued resignations. Apparently, since AEGIS is a shared radar network with a number of participant vessels, it was discovered that a single radar node was weak and did not operate properly in the presence of jamming as discovered by the Defense Department. Also, the jammer used is no ordinary jammer and a special type. I discovered this not because it was reported by some news agency in my home country of the USA but through some YouTube video that sourced it on the Internet where it has been widely reported by reputable establishments. My question is where the truth in this incident lay and why am I hearing about this event now in December than when it supposedly occurred in April? I was aware the Russians have some awesome tech but no clue good enough to exploit the weakness of the American fleet. So what gives with this?
RIPTIDE Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 I don't believe there is an aircraft borne ECM gear in existence that has the Sheer Wattage to "shut down" an Aegis system. Degrade it's performance? Possible. But to cripple it would be very hard to believe. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
outlawal2 Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Without credible sources my first inclination is to cry BS.. Especially the part about issuing resignations. Give me a break.. (Now the US is not infallible so don't get me wrong, but I HIGHLY doubt this scenario and the fact that no one that is anyone has published it kind of speaks volumes to me as this would be HUGE news..) xaoslaad Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 (edited) Looking at the various sites publishing this information reduces its possible veracity by a great deal. Yes. One site claims 27 resignations. Really? 1/10th of the ship resigned? And that would have to be officers mind you; enlisted don't get to resign. That just sounds utterly and completely absurd. The compliment according to Wikipedia is 33 Officers. I guess a few hardened souls stuck around. As many have pointed out why would the Russians reveal such a piece of tech to screw with a single American ship as a test. And foreign planes screwing around near American ships is nothing new. When my ex-wife was deployed on Bataan she told me one particular story (I don't remember the details well, sorry) that made me wonder how the hell they could allow it. But then shooting them down could start a war, so blowing warplanes out of the sky probably isn't the thing to do, despite everyone's first instinct to be that they should. Another points out this may be propaganda to try and cast doubt on purchase of American systems by.... outlawal2 Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 Kinda reminds me of Saddam Hussein's habit of placing signs outside military installations stating "Baby Milk Factory" Countries provide all kinds of dis-information to discredit others... Just because someone SAYS something doesn't make it a true statement.. "Pride is a poor substitute for intelligence." RAMBO

vicx Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 So there are lot of things that an aircraft flying right over a ship could do that it couldn't do at stand off distances. I'm not even a electronic warfare specialist or any kind of warfare specialist and I can think up some potential hacks. You don't have to shut down the Aegis system to cause trouble for EW operators. You culd spoof threats that aren't really there. That would be elementary for a Russian EW aircraft to do. Make the Aegis system think there are a hundred incoming anti-ship missiles Or if you have actually done some real super-spying you might be able to use a zero-day cheap hack and spoof some exotic Aegis system element. Make the Aegis think that someone (not them) has launched a harpoon. This might have been unnerving to EW operators NOT because spoofing is unexpected but because the Russians had done something pretty agressive without any warning. I do think something probably happened. If a Russian boat was in the gulf of texas you would expect the US to do something special too. We won't find out what it was until someone blabs. :drunk: Also ... EW officers may well have been taken off the ship afterwards for a debrief by naval intelligence to make sure noone blabs :censored: Cmon somebody, blab already, we want the details.
FSKRipper Posted December 12, 2014 Posted December 12, 2014 (edited) Ok most of the sources are from YouTube. I think that says all. Even if you look at Wikipedia, there is stated that Russia claimed to have jammed the Spy1, not shut it down. From the United States was no statement at all. No neutral sources were available to confirm the russian claims. As far as I know from my time onboard a german frigate the skipper had two choices: 1. To sit there and let the pilots play their game (which is an unfriendly act when there are no common maneuvers and no comms - Try to show me a News report where a Hornet or a british Tornado passed a russian strike group while flying an attack profile. The skipper achieved two goals, he deescalated the situation and his EW Team learned valuable Information about the russian ECM-Pod 2. Even if the Spy1 got jammed (which I won't believe without a neutral source saying so) the Skipper was able to use the AN/SPS67(V)3 for low flying targets or switch to target Illumination (which is a really unfriendly act, we did this only in preplanned maneuvers against british Hawks simulating sea skimmer attacks). In These cases he would have been able to track the fighters and last but not least there were still 2 CIWS ready for action... I would think it is 15% real and 85% propaganda. As stated before, look which nations are conducting such "show of force". I think most NATO pilots would never get in the air again if they play sea skimmer against a russian ship during their maneuvers in the barents sea. I think the jamming took part but instead of 27 resignations were 27 people which had to be held back from pressing the trigger :joystick: Edited December 12, 2014 by FSKRipper spelling i9 9900K @ 5,0GHz | 1080GTX | 32GB RAM | 256GB, 512GB & 1TB Samsung SSDs | TIR5 w/ Track Clip | Virpil T-50 Stick with extension + Warthog Throttle | MFG Crosswind pedals | Gametrix 908 Jetseat [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
