Regarding the maneuverability of the AIM-54. Keep in mind that the Phoenix has a very large warhead and doesn't necessary needs to get too close to its target. The iranians scored several double kills with 54s, where one missile would kill two close flying aircraft at once. On one ocasion the Phoenix even managed a tripple kill, while damaging a forth plane in the formation ( all MiG-23 ), wich is reported to have crashed minutes later, but is no confirmed kill. So the warhead must be pretty effective :)

Actally he's talking about MiG-21's or 23's (I forget which)

The 54 can have a pretty high terminal dive, beyond the RWR limits.

No, actually, that's done witht he lasers in the pilot's helmets ...

Since when does 'it's capable of intercepting the missile in the terminal pop-up phase' equate to 'the aircraft will search, track, designate and launch on the target in the terminal pop-up phase?'

I suppose you can assume that this is what I'm saying, but would you like me to assume you don't think at all, too?

You seem to have a nasty 'knowing-all' attitude issue. I see nothing insulting in my post, but still you take it to that level. Nice going.

Aren't the search, track, designation, launch and flight to the target part of a missile intercepting another missile process? The missile isn't going to fall off the pylon and guide itself to the incoming missile. So, the case of a Phoenix intercepting a missile in it's terminating pop-up phase is possible only if a Tomcat is on it's tail and even then it's questionable. If it's not likely to happen in real-life, makes it one of those newspaper stories especially since it was never proven by a live test. It's not my fault that you take this as a fact and advertise it along.

I'm not disproving the optimizations made in the C version for better chance of intercepting more maneuverable targets, I'm just going after this claim because I believe it's pointless. It's exactly like the story of the F-117 being capable of intercepting airplanes with Sidewinders. Possible? Yes, on paper. Ever going to happen? No.

DISCLAIMER: My posts are still absolutely useless. Just finding excuses not to learn the F-14 (HB's Swansong?).

Annoyed by my posts? Please consider donating. Once the target sum is reached, I'll be off to somewhere nice I promise not to post from. I'd buy that for a dollar!

Just imagine the AIM-54 is launched BEFORE the missile enters terminal homing, but the missile pops up while the AIM-54 is guiding in so the Phoenix has to make the adjustment ;)
