in the same video, once it can be seen, once its not very prominent, so I'm guessing it's altitude difference, and we don't have missile contrailing in the game.

 

But the r-73 seems to have a very prominent trail, at least what i can see from videos.

 

 

though i guess it's a bit overdone in game.

 

The game also uses the same effect for all the Russian missiles, so they all plume the same amount

Most likely related to air temperature, i'm sure Nevada is much warmer than Vladikavkaz.

You can clearly see a very prominent trail on that first AIM-9 shot.

 

As it is in game now it is almost impossible to see an AIM-9 launch where as every Russian missile is like a cloudy beacon.

AIM-9M uses a low-smoke motor. The only US AAM that doesn't do so, as of the 80's, is the AIM-7.

 

Why does the R-73 have such a prominent smoke trail compared to the AIM-9?
