Ultra Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 One of my most common downfalls while dogfighting: the enemy gets a few hits on me, seemingly nothing too bad at first, but one of the rounds caused my automatic propeller governor to fail and now I'm down for. I don't really know what to do so I turn down the throttle and RPM lever to try to manage my propeller RPM's. I am now a sitting duck... Is there an emergency procedure, that I don't know about, that can remedy this?
HeadHunter52 Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 I think that's all I have for that. Get 'er cooled down, too, because the RPMs add to the heat. saburo_cz Posted March 11, 2015 Posted March 11, 2015 (edited) When I have this, I always set propeller lever to full forward and maintaining RPM below 3000 by controling throttle. Manifold Pressure is very low (is between 20-30 inHG, I think) and speed is approximately somewhere between 160-175 m.p.h. With this setting Pony can fly as long as has fuel but problems are enemy, they often will not allow it... maintaining rpm under 3000 is essential Edited March 11, 2015 by saburo_cz F6F P-51D | P-47D | F4U-1D | Mosquito FB Mk VI | Spitfire | Fw 190D | Fw 190A | Bf 109K | WWII Assets Pack Normandy 2 | The Channel | Sinai | Syria | PG | NTTR | South Atlantic F-4E | F-14A/B | F/A-18 | F-86 | F-16C | A-10C | FC-3 | CA | SC |

Yeah she soon tries to overheat so as others have said, keep her cool and don't push her too hard. Nice n gentle and she'll just get you home. Had this happen the other day. Didn't know what had failed but I just watched my instruments carefully, kept her as free from load as possible i.e. no climbs and just limped home gently by adjusting the RPM and MP very gently just keeping her in the air barely above stall in fact. In some cases it's so badly damaged she just pops no matter what you do. Ultra Posted March 11, 2015 Author Posted March 11, 2015 Thanks guys. We'll it looks like I'm not missing anything. Too bad it's a death sentence in combat, it seems to happen to me fairly often.
Tumbleweed Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 Thanks guys. We'll it looks like I'm not missing anything. Too bad it's a death sentence in combat, it seems to happen to me fairly often. You're not alone. I either get completely shot to bits or it's a one or two well placed deflection shots to the engine and then the RPMs go crazy high and it's game over. Only thing to do then is dive and evade (if you have good altitude) as best you can and sorta limp home if you can. Me, I'd rather limp home and deny the enemy a kill but then I'm stubborn lol I've even in the past carried on the fight as best I could using just energy traded from the altitude I had but of course this is soon lost and doesn't compare to a full powered dora that is soon to climb out of my reach. What goes up, must come down and all that :) My Hangar: P-51D Mustang - KA-50 Blackshark - A-10C Warthog - F-86F Sabre - FC3 - Combined Arms - UH-1H My Flying Adventures: www.dcs-pilot.com :pilotfly:
