hitman Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 I've getting a really big kick out of this thread. Thus far, these comments about nobody wanting it sound a lot like what the US Army said about the Gatling gun and the later true machine guns around the turn of the previous century. Unfortunately...WWI proved them wrong. :( This is a bit different, and I agree I don't see much use for it, but its still ironic. The gatling gun has good potential as a weapon of mass destruction. Metal Storm can be considered as such, but for a 200 round system, it would take at least an hour to reload that canister and have it system ready for another firing. In the field they would just have reload canisters that pop on-off. Its just a testbed for electronic firing mechanisms. RedTiger Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 Yeah. My take on it is that if these were somehow guided projectiles or easier to reload, it might have a use.
hitman Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 It is simple to reload, its just a matter of taking off the cartridge box and placing a new one on, while the removed one is then discarded or sent back for a reload. jpm1 Posted August 26, 2008 Posted August 26, 2008 It's pretty simple actually. It just that once it fires, the bullets are gone. There's no "magazine". Reload should be taking forever on that thing. If this thing can't hit the missile on the first try, good luck "negotiating" with the missile. The possibility of numbers are impressive, but that's just it. I'd rather invest on a proven CIWS system like Phalanx. and if there's a second missile coming behind what happens . they said it could be used in police forces hope at least they'll have a big boot SU-25 missions [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
