Weta43 Posted May 11, 2006 Posted May 11, 2006 A couple of things have been irritating me lately I’d like to see something happen about them in the LO successor & thought I’d post them. First is that at present F10 gives you god like vision of all units not “hidden”. There is (from what I’ve read – not seen) a perfectly good ATC application available for LO which calculates target visibility / terrain masking etc.. Could the F10 be set up like this - so that it only displays those aircraft visible to allied (whichever side you are) radar? Perhaps the radar of the air traffic control radars spinning away at the airfields could actually be modelled ? Do people think this would be a good idea? It seems to me that if F10 functioned like this it would be less the “cheat” that F10 presently is and more a replacement for the (limited in LO) ability to chat with ground control that exists in real life. If you have no assets to detect enemy, you won’t get the info & if you have you will. Opponents can sneak up on you using cover, but when you’d hear about them in real life, they’ll show on F10. Second is that in the encyclopaedia under Russian EWR units there are 3(?) small mobile GCI / EWR units forming a composite site ( a height finding unit, a range finding unit & a GCI unit), but they don’t seem to be in the list of place able units. Anybody found them or actually used them? Which leads to the third thing. There is a height finding unit for the mobile EWR, presumably larger EWR can discern height to within a reasonably narrow band, but Russian AWAC/EWR only say low / medium / high, is there some reason other than game-play balance that stops EWR / AWACS giving their best guess at altitude - or say the nearest 1000m band they’re in? Cheers.
Weta43 Posted May 12, 2006 Author Posted May 12, 2006 I thought it would be something you could leave enabled online as - like I said - you'd only get info you could have in the same situation in real life. Cheers.
nscode Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 But it would still be semi-god-like situation awearnes. I say do better radio comms or don't do anything :) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Weta43 Posted May 12, 2006 Author Posted May 12, 2006 I disagree. Perhaps working as part of a team-speak team, maybe with a human running the ATC screen utility & feeding you info then yes comms would be ideal, but single player offline or non-team-speak online through pre-programmed keystrokes to AWACS or typing to team-mates - it's always going to be crap, and - the point is it wouldn't be semi-godlike awareness, only GCI awareness. The Devil’s in the detail, but: You could only get information you should be able to get from AWAC/GCI IRL by asking for it - only those things that you could legitimately know about would be displayed - things that you or your side's radar can actually see (& not ground units at all I’d say). Particularly if you limited or fixed the "zoom" parameters to stop you zooming in too close on the merge & modelled “merge” so if returns are too close you can’t count them & once you merge with the bandit(s) there’s only one return on screen. During a WVR fight you could - if you had lost SA - F10 & see if you could see if the bandit was showing on AWACS or EWR, but you wouldn't get any more information than just asking vector to nearest bandit & would be better off keeping your eyes open. ('cause if AWACS/EWR couldn't see them to tell you, they wouldn't be on F10 anyway, & one you'd merged, that's your F10 info gone.) BVR you'd only get what you should be getting from AWACs/GCI anyway - bearing, number of bandits (unless they're merged), speed & altitude - to the extent that it's decided to put these on the screen Less heated times you should get from AWACS or GCI any info about the theatre situation that is relevant, but you don’t in LO so you could see it here. Cheers.
nscode Posted May 12, 2006 Posted May 12, 2006 Did someone say "voice recognition"? :) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

Where is this program you are talking about and how can i get it?
Weta43 Posted May 12, 2006 Author Posted May 12, 2006 I think it's still a beta & don't know how user friendly it is - or much else about it but look at the latest thread in the tech section (which was purely co-incidence - decided to post about F10 thinking of the app, posted & noticed the thread was active again...) Cheers.
