GGTharos Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 Interesting, the 1000lb have historically been used by the USN, not so much by the USAF. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
Emu Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 I don't know personally but the guys on F-16.net are usually pretty clued-up on matters USAF and other sources seem to confirm it only carries 1,000lbers and SDBs.
Weta43 Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 You go with the SDB and you have the flexibility to hit a target next to civilians without harming them, or you can drop a bunch of them and take out a large building like we see here. Maybe in DCS. I don't believe the first live strike of the F-22 programe will have been a target of opportunity that just happened to be residential complex in the middle of nowhere, bombed with SDBs 'cause they're handy'. First strike with a high value F-22 will have been a high value target, and IRL they will have gone to drop those exact weapons on that exact target. As I said in the original thread, they'll hve been 1000lb bombs timed to penetrate an underground research complex. Yes they said it was a residential compound, but why would you have a residential complex in a secure site in the middle of the desert, with the whole site constructed on a built up platform ? The raised platform will be the rubble excatated from teh underground site, and the complex will have been deep underground - where those first 2 bombs were headed... They were taking the opportunity to eliminate Assad's regimes research facilities, which make a perfectly sensible target for the first use of the jewel in the USAF's crown.. Cheers.

Weta43 Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 I thought it was a strike on ISIS? I'm not actually saying it wasn't - If ISIS were in control of the facility they must have only gained it (at that time) relaitively recently, so every ex-government building they controled would have originally been 'an Assad regime facility' Lets suppose though that it was a secret millitary research facility still in control of the Assad regime (take your pick about what kind of weapons they might be developing away from inhabited areas). If you personally were deciding on the strike, would it make any difference if there was a secret military research compund belonging to the Assad regime that was now under ISIS control (& which the Assad regime might one day re-capture), or there was the same compound in the hands of the Assad regime (which the West would like to oust), that looked like it was about to be overrun by ISIS ? In my mind it's a better outcome for Western interests if it gets destroyed before ISIS can get their hands on it. Either way, it's going to get described in the press as an attack on an ISIS compound. Cheers.
SDsc0rch Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 there are several comments here about the use of "inert" ordnance used in warzones we used concrete LGBs in OSW in the 90s - the iraqis would place SAM systems in and around civilian areas - concrete LGBs could take out the SAM site without incurring civilian casualties i7-4790K | Asus Sabertooth Z97 MkI | 16Gb DDR3 | EVGA GTX 980 | TM Warthog | MFG Crosswind | Panasonic TC-58AX800U [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
