Does anyone have a recommendation for taking out the ZSU-23's with Maverick missiles? I flew several missions last night and each time I tried to make a Maverick strike I wound up being shot down. Is there a preferred altitude and range from target that will allow a hit and not take enemy fire?

What about… 10k ft and 8nm distance? That should easily be fare enough to save save from the 23 and should be able to acquire the target in the Mav seeker if you have an idea where it is.

As Audax said, 10K feet AGL will keep you well out of range of AAA and most IR SAM systems.

Take your time, orbit your target area and make visual contact before starting your run; try to set your run up to minimize any terrain masking, and avoid flying directly over hostile air defenses even at altitude.

I'm not sure what the exact range is on the maverick's seeker, but as long as you maintain altitude and set up a nice clean run you should have plenty of time to lock, fire, and break away before anything has a chance to take a shot at you.

I'm sure some of the A-10 buffs will be along shortly to add some hard data.

Good luck!

Kind of a waste of a Maverick, you can lock him up at a much longer range than he can you. As long as you have a half way decent idea of where he is, which you can easily get from your RWR, you can just circle in wide, no terrain masking needed, no high altitude needed. Now when enemy SAMs get tossed into the mix it can get more complicated, but gun based AA isn't that dangerous to you when using Mavs.

If you're looking for a process:

1. Locate Target, this is the hardest part if you're not using labels, but because you're attacking gun based AA, it's one of the easiest locate targets you'll do in DCS. He'll ping you with his Radar, which of course sets off your RWR, so look on that bearing and you'll find him pretty quick. Shilka's are pretty obvious shapes.

2. Circle in wide, gun based AA's range is crap, especially compared to the 6-8 mile standoff you're about to get into with him.

3. Lock Target. Piece of cake, A-10A autolocks. hit lock once to stabilize it, and the moment you get near a target, it'll jump to it. If it locks on a power line or building, just hit whatever key you've got set to the slew again and hold and it'll unsticky until you find what you're looking for.

4. Launch the weapon. If you're feeling really cool you can say something like "Rifle" while you do it.

5. Look for the next target.
