Hi: New to Lock-on. I have a Cougar Hotas and am having difficulties getting a smooth action when flying lock-on. When I move my stick the plane simply jumps either up or down and also sideways. Even with very small inputs, nothing happens, then all of a sudden, I'm up the ladder 20 degrees or more. :helpsmilie:

I have used this Cougar in other sims and have not had this trouble before. Their is a place in the Cougar Control Panel to change the shape of the Axis Shaping. I also see that Lomac has something similar, but when I try to change the Axis Shaping in Lomac it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Another thought: Having the Cougar, are the movements of the Joystck controled by the Cougar Control Panel, or the Lock-on sim. Does one over-ride the other as to the smooth control of the Joystick.

Thanks in advance for any help to fix this problem

What's your system specks? Some times if its under powered it effects the way that your stick preforms...

Also it could possibly be your trimm settings, try hitting ctl/t while in flight this will return your trimm settings back to default and most likely resolve your problem if your system is not the issue..

I have a Cougar and have been useing it with Lock On since its release and found that this works for me.

I now have IJ's NXT Cougar mod and it ROCKS!!!!

Also I'm useing the default setting in the Cougar control panel and useing the options setting in the simulator to set the buttons and axis's. I found that this is best way of doing it..

So try this and you should be OK...

Oh, and one other thing, make sure that you have the stick enabled before you turn on the simulator...

If you are new to Lockon, and doing the training missions, make sure that when you take control of the flight that you have turned off the auto-pilot and the altitude hold (which can be left on when you take control of a training track)

Some ingame ideas to check before you adjust your cougar!

See that both engines are spooling up. As they reach 70% make sure your throttle is at idle position.

Also check the altitude hold, speed hold or autopilot is not on.

When your ingamme go to options and click axis and then set the curve and everything else you want it to on your joy stick.. its to sensitve when you first get it my friend had one and i had to do the same thing for him so try that out

Ok a couple of things here that may help you as I had the same problem with my stick for a long while and this is what corrected it from all that jumping.

First go to options/input/device set to thrustmaster cougar and axis/go to right and click on test...make sure smoothing is set to 0.

Second go to the Lock On\Config\Producer file and make sure ForceFeedbackEnabled is set to false.

Set deadzone and curves in game.

You are good to go.

Joystick Jitters

Blaze:

My system specks are as follows: 3.0 Intel CPU, Asus P4P800-SE MB, 2 Gig DDR memory, GeForce 3 Vid card.

I was trying to set up everything using a training mission before I ventured into a regular mission or campaign. It just seems that the stick is so sensitive that a small input puts me way out of control.

Grumps & Shotsx74:

Ok, in the options/input/device setup, I finally got my Cougar throttle to work. I changed the smoothing to zero as you suggested, but still have the same jumping around. What about the "Shift", "D-zone", and "Curve", where should these be set at?

Redeye & Zorlac: Will try to check auto-pilot, altitude hold, and the speed hold, if I knew where to check these once in the training mission.

I hope that all these things will slow down the jumps and yips that I have encountered in this sim.

Thanks for all the help, and I will keep everyone posted on my results.

If you have any more suggestions, please feel free to give me a shout.

Thanks again for all the help. This OLD guy can sure use it..:megalol:

I have a Logitech Attack 3 and the same problems as you. Plane hobbyhorses around , slight imput on the joystick causes violent rolling, won't hold steady coarse...I am still struggling to improve performance but did get some kills online last night so maybe it's working here are some other things to try:

1) Insure you are using the latest active x d/l from microsoft home page

2)Check your joystick manufacturers website for helpfull configuration tips I actually benefitted from a tool logitech offered that removed all my joystick software so I could reinstall clean, I'm not recommending you do that, But Do go to joystick manufacturer for tips.

3)I'm on shaky ground with this one but here goes. I don't think the defaults for :shift, D-Zone, &Curve are worth much. You will probably have to experiment with them. I use SHIFT=5, D-ZONE= .5, CURVE=2. The numbers referr to the number of lines to set the sliding arrow to.

4)Lastly little tip, when making shots you can sometimes smooth your bird out by easing off the throttle a titch specially with the frogfoot.

I am a newb but there it is I would appreciate any comments from any aces

For the curve settings - the further to the left you have the slider, the more twitchy the plane will be. Curve = 2 would make for a slightly dead feeling AFM, but a twichy SFM plane.

Cheers.

If you've had your Cougar for a while (more than 6 months) I'd suggest opening it up and cleaning the potentiometers. I've had my Cougar for about 1 1/2 years and I've had to clean them twice to stop the axis from spiking. Now I'm just waiting to get the hall effect sensors for my UberII NXT so I can be done with the less than stellar performance of the stock Cougar.

AJ's right about the stock Cougar pots....

As I mentioned in my first post in this thread I recently installed the the NXT and found that there is quite an impovement here in Lock On..

This stick is much more stable and the flates have been totally eliminated..

I was at my store COMPUSA experimenting with all of the sticks that are on display and found that they all have flat spots..

Allthough I loved my cougar straight out of the box, IJ's mod has improved the preformance here considerably, the stick now is exactly like the real thing...
