DSR_T-800 Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 I was curious of what the top speed of the P-47 would be without wing pylons. I found that the Fw-190 found a 8-10kph increase in speed with the removal of its ETC 504(Which is located under the fuselage. By using common sense, it would only make sense if the P-51 had a better increase of speed because the Mustang has 2 pylons under each wing of roughly the same size of the Fw-190's ETC 504. I found a 20kph increase in speed with the removal of the P-51B's pylons. So knowing that the P-47's pylons are nearly 3 times the size of the P-51's pylons; what would be the speed increase if we were able to remove the pylons on the P-47. Or are all tests on the P-47 completed without wing pylons. Also, it would nice to remove the pylons because I'd like to fly my P-47 purely like a fighter. Bullfrog_ Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 It depends on which pylons, the initial under wing pylons that came with the D-15 cut 45mph off the top speed, the later more stream line ones cut 15mph off the top speed. I believe these came with the D-20 According to http://www.aerofiles.com/JBrepub-p47dg.html In my book American Hundred Thousand, they quote "My P-47D-16 was exactly 50mph slower with the same throttle setting due to the monstrosities(wing pylons) they used on it" I didn't see anything about the more stream line pylons in the book, though I may have just missed it.
Echo38 Posted July 24, 2015 Posted July 24, 2015 "My P-47D-16 was exactly 50mph slower with the same throttle setting due to the monstrosities(wing pylons) they used on it" What throttle setting? It matters. 50 MPH knocked off at max power wouldn't necessarily mean 50 MPH knocked off at cruise, and vice versa. It could be more or less at other settings.

Solty Posted July 25, 2015 Posted July 25, 2015 That's all it says. I've seen 45-50 a few times but never the throttle settings for it I would say its for max speed. They usually worried about that, because that was what mattered in combat. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]In 21st century there is only war and ponies. I shouldn't have used cruise for my example; the question I have is whether that's military power or WEP. Pilots were often told not to use WEP unless it was an actual emergency, and there've been several fighter pilots who saw combat, who said they never activated it. So, it is questionable whether the 50 MPH was lost at MIL or WEP.
RAZBAM_ELMO Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 Guess we'll have to wait and see when they release the 47 to us. Know and use all the capabilities in your airplane. If you don't, sooner or later, some guy who does use them all will kick your ass. — Dave 'Preacher' Pace, USN.
