Weta43 Posted June 4, 2006 Posted June 4, 2006 And I know you know I know you know it was a joke :-) Actually I didn't, but I do now. That post you had about having mobile units (sort of like the new FARP units) that come in & set up a TACAN station so the field conforms with NATO standards was a good idea. Cheers.
Guest IguanaKing Posted June 4, 2006 Posted June 4, 2006 Thanks. I've got a little training in that area. Nudge...nudge...wink...wink. :smilewink: There are all kinds of insertion methods, but when an airbase is taken down, yeah, its pretty much a given that those guys are going to be involved.
Starlight Posted June 4, 2006 Author Posted June 4, 2006 Popular myth. :D Soviet doctrine called for these things. It's just a matter of facts that most of the Soviet equipment on their airfields WAS mobile (radar, control tower, floodlights). It's just another matter of fact that NATO equipment wasn't mobile. Yes, there is some NATO equipment which is (or was) mobile, but it wasn't that much standard. NATO exercises "outdoor" called for a huge logistic effort. "Airbase operability" was a real issue in a central european scenario http://www.airpower.maxwell.af.mil/airchronicles/apj/apj89/boyles.html Furthermore most of the Soviet aircraft were designed to withstand harsh conditions and operate from captured airfields (which are expected not to be extremely clean). The last NATO aircraft able to take off from semi-prepared airfields (Harrier excluded) was probably the FIAT G-91.
Starlight Posted June 4, 2006 Author Posted June 4, 2006 How is that? In Poland, Czech, East Germany, Hungary, etc. there was a lot of excercises with NATO's F-15s, F-16s presence and their pilots don't complain... Wartime is one thing, exercises and airshows are another thing. And, I was probably referring to an older timeframe, when NATO aircraft spotted above eastern europe would have meant WW3 ;) Anyway, I'm not saying NATO aircraft can't operate from non-NATO airfields. I'm just saying that it's not the usual thing, and from an aestethic POV I prefer to see an F-15 coming out of a TAB-V than from a Russian HAS. that's all! ;) And from the technical POV, I added that I doubt that an F-15 could enter a HAS which can't house a Mig-29... I read it on Lindsay Peacock (famous author also for Jane's) report about GDR/DDR airbases: http://www.xs4all.nl/~robdebie/vvs-ddr/airbases.htm A funny observation was that on many MiG 29 bases, the MiG 29's didn't fit in the shelters! They were apparently sized for MiG 21's, and the twin tail MiG 29 just didn't fit. Therefore, many MiG 29's were simply parked in front of the shelters. This was observed at Altenburg, Falkenberg, Köthen and Wittstock. The shelters at Finow (or at least some of them) were big enough for MiG 29's, but that could be expected from a base that hosted MiG 25 interceptors (for intercepting SR-71, so the story goes) The latest and largest shelter type ("3/16") measured 30 by 16 meters. They were being constructed from 1987 on at Wittstock (pictured here), Falkenberg and Merseburg. They partly replaced the shelters in which the MiG 29's didn't fit
Guest IguanaKing Posted June 4, 2006 Posted June 4, 2006 Yes, Eastern equipment is well-fortified against the elements, and much of it is mobile. However, you are proceeding from a false assumption if you think NATO forces lack those capabilities, even though they aren't as prevalent. Was Desert One some random point in the desert in Iran? As Morpheus said, "Do you think that's air you're breathing?" :smilewink:

As Morpheus said, "Do you think that's air you're breathing?" :smilewink: Desert One wasn't the place where a lot of US servicemen lost their lives while trying to refuel their aircraft for a daring raid? not the best example of mobile logistics you could point out... anyway, I don't wanna start a flame around this. I was saying that I was impressed to see that most Soviet airfield equipment has wheels on the bottom... And that I'd like to see a NATO base in LO, because _usually_ NATO aircraft operate from NATO airbases, at the price of travelling for a lot more miles and doing some AAR. I thought that my request was quite easy to fulfill for ED, and I thought it was shared by the LO community... Now I see it isn't... sorry... :(
Guest IguanaKing Posted June 4, 2006 Posted June 4, 2006 Yup...failures are always easy to pick on. Those few, combined with the MULTITUDES of successes that don't get so much media play, contribute to that false belief, I guess.
