Greetings all, just got this sim and I'm mostly very happy with it. I was sick and tired of Ace-combat style physics (You get literally, hundreds of missiles, shoot down planes by the tens, and that sort of rubbish) and Flight Simulator (which I can mod pretty well with G-max) wasn't a combat sim. Anyways, the FD's are very nice, except for the fact that when you land it feels like an arcade game (I read that it was scrpit or something) and of course that evil voice: Left engine fire, Right Engine fire, ACS failure, Hydrolics failure, ECM Failure (What the h3ll is an acs???) God, I'd eject anyday just to get rid of that voice!!! *shivers*

One of my questions is, I set up a fast battle between me and an F-14 at 49KM and long-range A2A loadout, but no matter how much I press lock-on key, I don't get that small green circle over the target which allows me to shoot. I did it once or twice (After the F-14 launches a sparrow or something which killed me later) but I can't repeat this. I set up the "lock on target" or something to a joystick button, I remember in the Mig training mission it was the "tab" key.

So, what are the steps to launching a long-range missile in the Su-33 or Su-27? Those are what I was flying. I rememberin a training mission the instructor (who apparently was sitting on the engine, or maybe in one of those people-tanks the Russians tried on the Froggy???) "uncaged" a missile with the "6" key (I think). WHat is the difference between locking and uncaging?

I'm not a noob when it comes to FLYING aircraft (if it's got wing(s) I can fly it, maybe an airtow though) but these modern weapons systems and avionics stump me. I think I may have spent a teensy bit too long shooting down Landcasters =P

Any help would be appreciated, thanks, Archer

BTW, the forum rules are very... Clear and to the point... They're like, 3 words in English. =P

:) Welcome, glad your enjoying this sim, re. your question you don't say which mode your in ie. BVR(1 on keyboard), EOS(irts)(2), Vertical(3) or Bore(4).

If its the latter then there is a limited range of (not sure exactly) about 15km.

AT long range you need to be using BVR mode and locking up on the radar signal that appears on the HUD, then if in range you should get a launch authorisation.

Hope this answers your question ,but if not post again explaining your procedures.

What Lock Version do you have? LOMAC 1.02 or Lock On Flamming Cliffs 1.1 & above?

If you're using Flamming Cliffs, you might need to set your radar's detection range first.. use increase detection range by pressing ctrl+= or decrease by pressing ctrl+- keys ;)

Nice...Quick reply

Accualy I think I *was* in bore mode... Oops... However, they aren't "beyond" visual range, I can see them. Is there a "Middle range" that you use for general combat? How do you "lock on to radar"? I'm pointing the creen circle in the HUD over the label (which I want to remove after I learn to use radar) and repeatedly mashing "lock on" button until I get the smaller green circle, then start mashing "fire" instead. No wonder that F-16 shot me down, 15km IS a bit close =p

Thanks for the help.

I've got 1.02 BTW.

Edit: Still don't get it, I press "2" and I'm in BVR mode, but there's just a blank HUD. What do I click after BVR mode to get a lock-on?

Another (hopefully last) Edit Fudge... In the process of doing training mission for the Su-27, and realized that everything is right there... *slaps forehead*

Sorry about that, I'm going to watch the training vid and then come back if there's anything I dont understand.

Press I to turn radar on. I am a mud mover, my memory is not too good when it comes to fighter ops.

When your radar is on, you have to fiddle with the range and angle the radar is looking. If you are lucky, you will get a blip, move the TDC over the blip, lock, wait for authorisation and fire... I am sure some more people with give you more useful info than this.

Dynamo hit it. Also the CAC modes like Bore & VS are typically out to about 10 km or so. More importantly- the VS defaults to your EOS system- not radar. The VS will also "auto-lock" if parameters are met and maintained for about a second.

Bore mode... I know you can slew the reticle -but not sure about auto lock or the default scan. I tend to use VS up close.

The launch authorization mentioned will be an "LA" in the bottom center or if you are using the russian HUD- "nP" the "N" looks like an upside down capital "U" of sorts..

I should say that- IIRC- these modes were changed somewhat dramatically in version 1.1

Thanks for the help. I understand how to use most of it, but I can't lock on to mostly anything around, say, 30km away. I looked in the booklet thing, and some missles have a range much greater. However, Bore and Vertical can't lock on to something this far, and VS has way too small of a lock zone.

Incase you don't understand, if an F-16 closes in at 35km, you really can't do anything but switch to BVR mode and keep trying your luck mashing lock-on and hope the aimer thingummy goes over target... I'm sure I'm doind something wrong what is it? Can anyone tell me which mode I'm missing, what I'm not doing, ect?

Also, why use Bore when Vertical has a much bigger target area? There's something I'm not getting, right?

Thanks, Archer

It's the jammer - they're jamming you, and in 1.02 HoJ is not implemented. In FC you get the jammer strobe which you are then able to lock onto.

BTW ... unless you can resolve the plane type, it's BVR ... ;)

Just my opinion anyway.

Thanks for the help and patence to those who are replying.

I found out how to use the BVR thing and radar (whoppe!)- now I can get a lock-on perfectly fine, but the new problem is that stupid LA thing. I get a lock on but even if I come within 10k (only sometimes) I can't fire still. What conditions have to be met before LA turns on? Anyways I think when you hit "fly now" with the Su-27, the S-3 Viking is jamming, since you can't see it on radar except for an occasional blip.

This game gets more fun and challenging with each new feature you learn. I'm gonna turn of labels to make it more intresting. Only problem is that same evil vioce. I mean, I think you'd notice if both your engines were on fire. Also realized that if you clip a hangar while taxiing, you get hydrolics failure. So stay away from the plazma-coated force-fielded hangars.

Thanks everyone for all your help. That site helped alot, thanks. Now that I've got *most* of it sorted out, I can start posting and blowing up stuff...

PS: Just had a funny experience, check my siggy. Just got back from tank-killing, did a nice landing but it was a little "hot" (too fast, had to hold a bit of down ele) so I made it a touch-and-go and came back, this time at minimum control. Was looking perfect, few more inches and it would have been. I *should* have slammed down a ton of down ele and made it a one-pont nose landing...lol
