Hello fellow MiG-21 enthusiasts,

I am often flying the MiG-21 on simple training missions with ramp start, take-off, landing, refueling, take-off again etc. without repairing in-between.

Sometimes when I take-off again, the landing gear, or parts of it, won't retract, because the previous landing was too rough. Visually everything seems to be okay - the landing gear is not bent or deformed.

I don't want to repair the plane every time, as I feel it would be a bit of “cheating” and of course I want to be able to land properly without damaging something.

Is there a way of knowing if the plane has taken damage respectively whether the plane needs repair before taking-off again? I was thinking of something like a damage report, which would also show you that you did a good job with the last landing?

That's actually a good idea.

But I don't think it is implemented right now, other than the debriefing when you exit the mission.

And that one does not always show what damage you got, if you did not entirely break something.

System specs:

Gigabyte Aorus Master, i7 9700K@std, GTX 1080TI OC, 32 GB 3000 MHz RAM, NVMe M.2 SSD, Oculus Quest VR (2x1600x1440)

Warthog HOTAS w/150mm extension, Slaw pedals, Gametrix Jetseat, TrackIR for monitor use

Doesn't the lights go out in the landing gear indicator panels if you break the gear?

They do.

You can get debriefing while still in cockpit without exiting (I forgot which key), but the gear damage doesn't show. So the lights are the best indicator.

The lights are not always a guarantee I've noticed. Recently I had a 'harsh' landing, didn't seem to bad on approach but the touchdown was not as how I wished it was.

I had 3 greens and figured I could do another round in the circuit. After take-off the gears refused to retract. I still had pneumatic pressure.

This is great actually, so the damage model is not just on/off, but it can be somewhere in between - not enough damage to trigger the lights go off, but enough to prevent retraction.

Assuming it's not a bug :D

The green light doesn't mean the gear is in working condition, it means it is locked in the down position. Surely there are many possible forms of damage that don't kick the gear out of lock but leave it unable to retract. :)

That would be ' key next to Return. From dropdown events, select Failure.

AWAITING ED NEW DAMAGE MODEL IMPLEMENTATION FOR WW2 BIRDS

Fat T is above, thin T is below. Long T is faster, Short T is slower. Open triangle is AWACS, closed triangle is your own sensors. Double dash is friendly, Single dash is enemy. Circle is friendly. Strobe is jammer. Strobe to dash is under 35 km. HDD is 7 times range key. Radar to 160 km, IRST to 10 km. Stay low, but never slow.
