LtMacGowan Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I'm coming from primarily playing DCS A-10C where when you get launched upon you break hard and put the missile 90 degrees and pop chaff/flares but I was wondering are the tactics the same with the MiG 21? because it doesn't turn very well. What are some good maneuvers for surviving missile attacks both from SAMs and A-A?
Brisse Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Depends on the situation. One of the advantages of the MiG-21 is it's speed and acceleration and that gives you an option you seldom have in the A-10, which is to run away from the missile.
LtMacGowan Posted November 24, 2015 Author Posted November 24, 2015 Well I'm playing the A-A "Hard" Training Mission and I keep getting my ass kicked by this Su-27, i come in fast and low and fire off a radar guided missile at around 4.5 miles and he pops flares/chaff and evades, then i switch to IR missile and he does something like Pugachev's cobra and he s behind me. I've tried to turn and he kills me, I try to accelerate and pull straight up and do a barrel roll, and my engine flames out and he kills me, and I've tried a Split S and i ran straight into his missile and he kills me. I just can't stay on his tail long enough to either gain a lock or he turns with enough G to break the missile lock. I can't out turn him and at this point I almost always overshoot. How can I regain the advantage?
Brisse Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Well, if you are already close enough to engage him using your own missiles then you are already too close to run. Running away is more useful for dodging medium and long range SAM's and also for dodging BVR shots from modern fighters. I haven't played that particular mission in a while, but if i recall corectly, it was pretty easy to sneak up behind that Su (think it was 34, not 27) and kill it with an IR missile without him ever reacting.
LtMacGowan Posted November 25, 2015 Author Posted November 25, 2015 what are some combat maneuvers i can use to get myself out of danger, and why does my engine keep flaming out during high speed near vertical pull outs? Just a simpe list like F-5 Behind you above you = DO this F-5 Behind Below you = DO this F-5 Behind you same alt = Do This F-4 rinse and repeat I dont know when to turn and when to go vertical.

Hahaha, if only aerial combat was this simple. There are no magic moves that will put you on the tail of the enemy. As for engine flameout, be careful not to exceed 1300kph IAS and try not to dip into zero or negative G for too long during maneuvers. Also, though the MiG-21 has a lot of thrust going into the vertical is not always the best move, especially against an F-4. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
PiedDroit Posted November 25, 2015 Posted November 25, 2015 Also, though the MiG-21 has a lot of thrust going into the vertical is not always the best move, especially against an F-4. Actually it doesn't have that much thrust but it can reach high speeds due to its aerodynamic shape. Unfortunately this speed is lost fast when you pull too much AoA, preventing it to be good in the vertical. Against the F-4 what works best for me is to keep speed high and stay horizontal. When I have excess speed I do yo-yo's to gain angles, without going too much in the vertical - keep an eye on the speedo, another eye on the AoA indicator and one more eye on the bandit :D
LtMacGowan Posted November 25, 2015 Author Posted November 25, 2015 how about simple stuff like If a F-4 has you at your six and has a greater altitude, try this to get away and repositon for a better angle. what works against what?

Sounds fun, tonight I make a track about this situation and I will try to put some explanations on top of it :joystick: EDIT: Tried a couple of times, what worked best is the good old scissors (flat/rolling, depends on the situation), you need to time your turns to put the bad guy out of sync with you to create separation. Don't hesitate to pull a lot of G's, unload and accelerate when you can. Keep in mind this is against AI, no missiles ;)InstantActionDogfight-MiG-21BIS_F-4E_1-quick.trkInstantActionDogfight-MiG-21BIS_F-4E_2-quick.trkInstantActionDogfight-MiG-21BIS_F-4E_3-quick.trk Edited November 26, 2015 by PiedDroit
