LtMacGowan Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 Im flying 1 of the MiG 21 Campaign missions and I get a warning from AWACs that 4 enemy planes are coming at 29 for 12, and i go to engage and i get a missile fired at me, basically head on What are good evasive maneuvers to break the lock of missiles fired on you from air planes? I only learned how to break locks of missiles from sams flying A-10s.

In that article (and other similar articles), one reads "once the missile is at about distance X then do maneuver Y)", but how do you figure that out? Do you guess it using known missile type, speed and typical launch/pitbull distance? I suppose the experienced guys have some tricks up their sleeves for this
=DECOY= Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 tbh I have guessed based on max missile speed and approx distance of launch. 9/10 I get it wrong lol Sent from my SM-N910F using Tapatalk Water cooled i9-9900K | Maximus Code XI MB | RTX3090 | 64GB | HP Reverb G2
Gargoil Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 Good read, I have one question though, how do you figure out the missile's distance? The RWR should give you a good estimate on the enemy's range at the time of missile launch based on radar strenght signal. Then you calculate missile speed x time :D I don't have this module so the RWR may be different than in the Su-25 and Su-27
PiedDroit Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 (edited) I don't have this module so the RWR may be different than in the Su-25 and Su-27 Much different lol. No strength indicator, only 4 sectors :D (or 8 sectors if you count narrower transitions between sectors). Also you can't tell if you're locked or shot at - when you're locked/shot at, the RWR shows all directions. In a MiG-21 your RWR is not capable of giving you enough indications whether a missile is on it's way ot not, so for this aircraft and era it's more visual. So, short answer to the original question: - MiG-21 vs WVR: spot the smoke, apply short range evasion techniques - MiG-21 vs BVR: run away / hide / ambush - Other vs BVR: guess time before impact using RWR and math voodoo (my question), apply BVR evasion techniques Edited November 29, 2015 by PiedDroit
