I have been slowly learning to 3D model but have found Blender much easier to use than 3DS Max but I am concerned that using Blender and then converting to a model to 3DS will result in conversion issues and Blender model will never have the same quality as a 3DS Max model due to need to use 3DS Max for the EDM plugin.

Is this the case or is the conversion simple and accurate?

Has anyone got a model working in DCS that was designed on Blender?

I did. But deleted it after using 3dsmax i thought even though blender is a much easier program to operate with all of it's functions i would learn 3dsmax instead so i am much more familiar with the program.

Thanks discus and well done on the Caribou so far! It is project likes yours that have inspired me to start my own.

Blender is just as powerful as 3dsMax but certain things aren't as easy or require work arounds. The biggest issue is the conversion process but all those issues can be fixed.

Blender may be the most powerful tool out there without a price tag. If you have 3dsMax then you might as well learn that and use it since you have support and an easier route to get from model to game.

I use Blender for my work and yes you run into conversion issues occasionally but nothing is ever dead in the water due to that.

One of the reasons I have been using Blender is because it runs well on my 32-bit Work Laptop which I use AutoCAD, Sketch-Up and Bentley on.

Are there any free student versions of 32-bit 3DS max which works with the EDM Plugin?

On the Autodesk website I can only download 2014, 2015 and 2016 which are all 64-bit.

is still possible to get a student licence for 3DS 2013 32-bit?

I have no idea of the amount of work required, but I think that if ED supported blender (through plugins or model converters), it would drop costs for small developers immensely.

i use Lightwave but i see your problem since this is st i faced too. Allot of programms got a more straightforward interface with time saving procedures and good results. My programm of choice for this is Bryce. Once i started working on Lightwave i had to read ofc through nearly 5000 pages of manual but in the end the results i got are simply mindblowing for my own standards. The added complexity is worth it. Taking the easy way is a slippery path and a fun one. If fun is the goal, do as you wish. Otherwise i suggest a strong 3d design programm like 3ds, Maya or Lightwave, and at a latter stage a GPU render engine like Octane.
