Harpoon Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 (edited) So, I hopped on the Virtual Aerobatics server tonight for some good ol' fashoned online free flight. I took my time in the F-15 and Su-27, taking a few screenshots like this: I then decided to fly the TF-51 from Novorossiysk to Krasnodar, where everyone else was. A simple 55 mile trip. I know myself as a bad maintainer of the engine on the Mustang, but I thought if I checked my greens on the gauges and kicked in the supercharger that was all I needed. Silly me. I took off after about a minute or two of warm-up. What a beautiful Caucasian morning. Approximately 25 miles away from Krasnodar, I reached my cruise altitude: 15000 feet. As the light for the supercharger came on, I engaged the low setting. I kept the manifold pressure and RPM to the "green range" for most of the flight. I was having a beautiful view of the mountains nearing the coast, so why not take another photo? Sometimes, I wonder how in the world EDGE could make these photos look so good. I then proceeded to descend to nearly 500 feet as I did aerobatic stunts over the smaller, single-runway airfield in Krasnodar. After doing a couple of stunts (or more) I headed northeast to come back around for another stunt. As I did, I heard a "BANG!" and no more propeller sound. Of course, the prop was done for. I quickly looked down to my gauges to check temps. All were in green, but only very slightly. A spectator in a MiG-21 is watching from the small airbase and says "Land on the grass," or something like that. I have a bit of an ego problem when it comes to flight simulation, so I reply "I can do better." I was about a mile or so away from the airfield at about 800 feet. I did a slow, but reckless turn towards the airfield. Thank goodness I didn't lose lift on a wing. As I completed the turn, I looked at my gauges. 130 knots. I lowered my gear. Closed in on the runway. Aligned the plane with the runway, adjusted for wind. Lowered the flaps. Countered wind to straighten up for the runway. Flared. Touchdown! After using up half the runway for rolling, I turn my Mustang to the grass at a speed of a good jog. I then get out of the plane to check for any external damage, and lo and behold, there was none! Still as beautiful on the outside as she was on takeoff! (Can't say the same for the internals...) The P/TF-51 may be tough to handle, but she sure is fun! Interpersonal drama and ad hominem rebuttal are things that do not belong on a thread viewed by the public. One thing i have to point out... naming a thread.. "OK, so" is as useful as tits on a bull.
NeilWillis Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Now all you have to do is explain to the crew chief how you broke his pride and joy. That might take the gloss off your day! Nicely described sortie though. Very entertaining. 1
