Dear Friends,

I am having issues with my PC and I need to re-install Windows 8.

My internet connection does not let me to download 60GBs of modules, as it has a traffic limit and I am over it already this month because I downloaded Nevada.

How can I back-up and restore all of my modules, please? Anyone knows any working plan?

BTW, I have already checked http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=160581.

Could not decide if @jcomm meant there that he had to download all over again everything by saying this: "installed all of the modules"

You could create an additional partition specifically for DCS, or use an external drive to temporarily move the DCS folder.

How much remaining space do you have left on your HDD?

I moved everything on an external drive. But will it be alright just to move them back in place after Windows reinstall and start DCS updater? It will not be any good if DCS will ask to download them all over again, instead of restoring my backed-up folder.

Thanks a lot for the reply!

DCS updater will recognize the files downloaded from the torrent that are already present. It will detect what is already on your PC and reinstall the game into the fresh Windows registry.

In any case, don't forget to deactivate the modules before the clean install and you'll be fine ;)

Deactivate, but how? :) Anyway, here's what I have done: (I write here in detail so everyone can see what they'll face)

1. Copied complete DCS folder and Saved games folder on an external.

2. Installed a fresh W8.1.

3. Downloaded and installed core DCS 2.0

4. Copied back DCS folder and saved games folder to where they needed to be.

5. Launched DCS. It logged in auto (that must be for I copied saved games folder)

6. DCS told me that I had no terrains (here's where I got furious).

7. Then DCS asked me to install every module I had. I chose none but one (A-10C).

8. DCS quit, updater started and asked me what to do with unfinished dl files it found.

9. I told to keep them and then it started to download it all over again.

Please let me know where I have done wrong, and I will see if I can correct it, since everything's fresh here.

Many thanks!

Edit: I also ran cmd dcs_updater repair. No change.

Yes you must de activate your modules when doing this kind of upgrade otherwise you will have trouble running the game when you reinstall

as i found out, please check out this thread, its worth a read

Now I have trouble. Because I had not deactivated anything.

All I have now are: a fresh windows, a fresh DCS 2.0 and 48.7GB of my previous DCS backup (mirror of the folders).

Deleting registry keys does not work, as there is not any key to delete.

My module roots are similar to yours Gazmonalpha: steam + DCS. And I can see them all ready to download in my DCS 2.0. Is there anyway or does my 48.7GB worth no more?

Just back up the entire folder (plus the ones in /user name/saved games/), reinstall windows, download the installer and start it. After it has started downloading the actual game files (not the installer updates), cancel the download and put all your back ups back where they were. Run the installer again and it should automatically detect any existing files and folders.

If the modules don't appear installed, you can first try installing them from the module manager. If you don't have that option, there is a sticky in the DCS world forum on using the updater, follow the instructions and tell it to reinstall each module (again it should automatically detect any files that you already have before downloading anything missing).

I used this exact same method to for the exact same reasons. Took a bit of effort but worked flawlessly. Just remember to download and run the updater first and get it to start downloading the game files. The game will run fine without doing this (I.E. manually creating a shortcut to the .exe), but it won't appear in your start menu or programs list.

Just copy the module folders from the 1.5 installation directly into the 2.0 installation, then install either from the updater or the module manager. The installer will automatically detect any files you already have and will only download what's missing/different.
