AstroEma Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 HI there, I am posting here with the hope that someone can help with a problem I am having with an 8" monitor I bought from eBay. The monitor needs 12V input. working load is 250mA from the specifications. I connected a 12V 2A power supply and the monitor turned on. Left it on for 15 seconds. The I connected the board to the computer via an HDMiI to DVI cable. The board got incredibly hot to the touch and it would not turn on. It was sitting on wood so there was no grounding issue. Not sure what is happening? Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! E. BravoYankee4 Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Well, having a PSU rated with higher capacity than needed is not a problem. What exactly is getting hot? Can you elaborate and provide some pics/details?
1.JaVA_Platypus Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 Wich monitor and power supply? Are you sure you don't mix-up AC and DC power-supply and demand? According to your specs, this should not be a problem. ps, Most PC power supplies have a 12VDC output as well. It might need some tinkering with cable and connectors to get it connected to the monitor. But this way, you are sure that it has at least the same 'ground'. But please, give us some more specs on the power supply and the 8" monitor. Happy Flying! :pilotfly:
AstroEma Posted March 4, 2016 Author Posted March 4, 2016 (edited) hello guys, thank you for your help. The monitor is this one here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-TFT-LCD-Display-ModuleHDMI-VGA-2AV-Driver-Board-for-Raspberry-Pi-/181395634298?hash=item2a3c05b87a:g:XaMAAOxy4eJTNB5o&autorefresh=true the power supply is a normal 12V 2A (positive in) PS. The area that got very hot was near the PS connector, HDMI connector. Could it be the HDMI cable? EDIT: actually I disconnected the Hdmi cable and tried in a different wall outlet. The board does not get hot and powers up normally. I guess it is the HDMI to DVI cable but why would it be that? Is it a grounding issue? AstroEma Posted March 4, 2016 Author Posted March 4, 2016 ok, so I solved the problem apparently. I tried a different socket in the wall plug and all is ok. Might have a grounding issue in the socket. Now I have another problem. If I use an HDMI to DVI-I cable to connect the 8" monitor to the PC, two of the three displays (connected using DP) shut off. If I use an HDMI to HDMI cable for the 8" monitor, then everything works as it should. The video card is a Gigabyte GTX970G1. I only have 2 ports left (2 DVI ports) and 1 I will use it for a 27" display using Helios to export the instruments, the other DVI is for the other 8" monitor! any idea why I cant use HDMI to DVI?
