How recent do missions have to be, to be able to 'update' them in DCS World by opening and saving in the editor?

I'm having a lot of difficulty - many missions are locked, so they can't be opened in the ME and those that are not and can be opened are often protected so that you can't save them in 1.5.3

I realise people want to protect their missions so that people don't use the missions as a base for something they would then call their own, but I think this has backfired somewhat, as we now can't fly their missions at all.

One of the missions I just downloaded in January - 2 months ago - and it already won't work or save.

Edit: OK - I managed to find that mission on the website and it's from 2013 - don't know which version that was. Question is still relevant, though - how far back can we go (with time or versions) before a mission is clinically dead and cannot be resuscitated?

In the past I have converted missions from blackshark1 and original A-10c, and there will be issues converting, but it was always doable, if your good with how the Mission Editor works in both versions, sometimes you might have to nearly rewrite the mission. Only time some wouldn't save is due to changes in the classes for aircraft and there advanced waypoint commands between the versions (this would tell you with errors on save).

Never had a mission that was protected, sounds like you have permission problems with windows directory that the mission files are loaded from, try running DCSW in admin mode.

There is no problem with permissions - I've been making and saving missions since 2 OA was released.

I thought it may have been where the mission is locked - but I forgot that it asks for a password in those cases.

I was particularly trying to find missions for the Su-25(A) and update them, because there are only 5 on the DCS website user files section, and the newest is one of these from 2013.

Oh well. Thanks for the reply.

Maybe it's to do with the folder restructuring since then. I can edit that mission to my heart's content - just can't save it.

How exactly are the missions "locked" from editing? Can you post a link to a mission that has that problem?

Black Shark 1 and FC2 era missions will open but will likely require massive retooling due to changes in how AI tasks are assigned and written in the file. While there are some changes from the initial DCS:A-10C release to now, it should be fairly compatible requiring just a re-save. I think the JTAC tasks were the only ones heavily updated since that release. You used to have to setup the units callsign, radio frequency, and JTAC tasks each as a different task, however all that is now available within the JTAC task itself now. Though you can still change frequency and callsign as desired.

The one I am talking about editing was the "Big Guns" mission - I haven't tried editing the others as yet. I wasn't even trying to edit them - just trying to save in 1.5

I wonder if it's because of the use of the Eastern edge of Crimea? Surely that has been gone since DCS World was released.

They won't just not save - they can't be flown from the editor either.

It looks like its having an issue repacking the mission and its contents. Specifically the image files. I did a "save-as" which caused errors in dcs.log and I couldn't even view the contents of the new .miz even though it existed in the folder. After closing the game I was able to view the contents and everything looked fine except for an erroneous entry for an image file that wasn't correctly embedded into the mission. I'll try out some of the older .miz files I've got on my system to see if I can narrow it down further.
