Forgive me if I am being silly here, but in the normal TAD modes you appear as the focus and the map moves with you.

However in EXP modes you travel off screen unless of course you have a large scale map. I understand that in EXP modes up is North, but still not sure why the map is not centered on your plane anymore?

Obvious answer?

Thanks

I only use EXP mode when I'm trying to look at a specific area of the map and want it to hold still so I can do whatever it is I wanted to at that point on the map. At least for me, it's not very good for building situational awareness. The majority of the time I'm using the regular moving map mode, and you should get used to finding the little green triangle in the inner circle that points North to help orient you.

EXP is there to allow you to survey an area centered around the cursor. Very useful to plan attack headings, or lock the correct symbol among a cluster of close ones.

As Gliptal said, it is the most useful mode during mission attacks. I, personally, use the normal mode once in navigation and switch to EXP in target areas. Even if it's not so easy to understand at the first attempt, it will become easily and powerful using it in every mission.

EXP makes it easier to capture a SPI or place a mark point on a geographical feature. Once I get to the target area, it's EXP. Standard mode for navigation. Once you get used to using it, you will never NOT use it.
