I've found the Huey hover practice mission absolutely invaluable for learning to hover:

Is there something equivalent for formation flying?

 

It seems that using a moving trigger zone of different sizes around the AI helicopter we can keep track of how close the player is to the AI bird on a horizontal plane based on whether or not the player inside one zone or another, and we can then use the "unit altitude" condition to check and see if the player is within some reasonable vertical distance of the AI (given that we know the AI flight path).

 

An easy (or easier) mission would be the AI heli flying a steady course, straight and level.

 

Then some turns.

 

Then some fast, low-level stuff.

 

Of course, putting it altogether is easier said than done! And scoring is going to be a lot of work. I am still amazed by the thought and planning that went into the hover mission!
