I'd say it was a question of sight lines. Both the real examples are viewed from below, and therefore the pilots look larger.

Try looking at the Belsimtek UH-1H using the same sight lines, and do a real comparison.

Given that Belsimtek know the precise dimensions of the UH-1H, and the average height of a human being, I have a feeling they took the time to ensure they matched.

Viewing from below not only doesn't make pilot look larger, but actually would move a cockpit more towards the centre of camera, so he would look smaller as the front cockpit panel would cover him more. In other words if you look at something from below and use a very extreme 3points perspective, then top vanishing point can disort things a lot, but the object would have to be much above it's horizon line, and not only that IT WOULD MAKES THINGS SMALLER, NOT BIGGER. The photos I posted had been taken with a very ordinary camera lense, no such distortion can be observed (whole helicopter would need to be disorted, and it is not). I finally did a comparison, I tried to match the angle as well as I could, but I believe game uses different lense than photos (vanishing points are at different distances), so it's really difficult (I actually had to zoom out a lot hence crappy resolution I had to upscale). I see the scale is off with my naked eye, but here is what I came with:

Of course I couldn't be perfect, but the issue can be seen clearly IMHO. I actually think there might also be an issue with airframe itself, but it'd cause a shitstorm, so I will not touch that subject :P

here is an example of extreme 3p perspective:

;) Maybe they are just really small guys, they should get some phone books to sit on and help them see over the dash.:)

if someone thinks there is a problem with anything and has some sort of data to support the claim it always should be reported. anyway...

in the direct comparison with real life pictures it really does look odd, but you would think they have the exact sizes down to the cm (or.. inch).. correct, since in 3d modelling you can work completely precise... maybe they scaled the crew models down to make it easier to animate them? so the won't clip through parts of the cockpit or something... just blindly guessing...

probably interesting to compare the sizes with the help of the editor, with different vehicles and infantry units etc. lined up

edit: then i googled around a bit myself and it really depends on the pictures.. like this. i dont want to say japanese people usually are smaller or anything... but JGSDF huey... looks a bit more in scale to the dcs huey sizes.

There is also the small matter of adjustable seating. The height of a head in a photo cannot possibly be used to measure a man's height reliably. How tall are the specimens you see in the real world pictures? How tall are the ones represented in the module? I have seen people as short as 4 feet six inches, and I am 6 feet 6 inches tall - an extremely wide range reflecting a 30% difference - and I understand the Guinness book of records will reveal an extremely short and an extremely tall end point. (over 8 feet and under 2 feet).

All this thread remarks on is impressions, and has absolutely no empirical data to support anything said. If you want to produce any worthwhile evidence to support your claim, you'll need to do a hell of a lot more than just say "it looks odd"!

We are not taling about height, we are talking about SCALE. If you say "everything is allright", those are just some middle school pilots, and you have Sumo fighters flying real life helicopters", then that can be said both ways.

@NeilWillis I already did much more than you ever did in this thread. I did a comparison following your advice ("Try looking at the Belsimtek UH-1H using the same sight lines, and do a real comparison."), I even explained why your arguments are fantasy based, and all your remarks were impressions, and had absolutely no empirical data to support anything said. If you want to produce any worthwhile evidence to support your claim, you'll need to do a hell of a lot more than just say "Both the real examples are viewed from below, and therefore the pilots look larger".

Finally you wrote "Given that Belsimtek know the precise dimensions of the UH-1H, and the average height of a human being, I have a feeling they took the time to ensure they matched". So now you claim, that Belsimtek doesn't make mistakes? Should we close whole bug section of their forums?

EDIT: Long story short- You say it's a matter of line of sight, you ask for comparison, I deliver. Then you say such comparison doesn't matter, and actually no research does because there are all kinds of people. Yet you want scientific research from me (I am under no obligation to follow that request, I just wanted Belsimtek to see this topic, they won't fix the issue just for my amusement anyways). Cheers

@decipher Well, try to see pilots silhouette in shadow. They are much bigger than in DCS-.

so after flying in a real huey (205A-1) i have to say i really think that something is slightly off. we must assume that the huey itself is scaled correctly (since they modelled it after blueprints, plans, etc).

what i feel now after experiencing it in reallife from within the cabin and from the outside is that the 3d models of the crew seem scaled down. i mean, they are not just "short humans" the whole shape seems to be scaled down a little. so everything on them is slightly smaller.

comparing the way the belsimtek huey pilots sit and the real pilot sits on the pictures i posted in my other thread, and how their feet look compared to the pedals, the height of the cyclic stick compared to the knees / legs...

also the viewpoint of the cockpit view feels slightly too low. if you compare it to the real huey pilots head position in contrast to the whipers, the side door window frames and that box above the front window.

at least that's what i think, could very well be totally wrong. just a feeling :)

I just watched an onboard video the other day, and you could see how real life pilot's arms are much bigger compared to everything. In DCS you get the impression those "children" sized pilots would need to stretch in order to switch anything on overhead panel. In RL it's just a matter of reaching there a bit since it's... well, just over your head :)

RL:

DCS:

You can just see any cockpit footage from real life and then run your Huey module. As for external model- well for one I think center dashboard is positioned way too low, the top sunglare cover should be clearly visible from the front.

That is sad because the Huey is great. But when it comes to the art much of it is wrong or out of scale. Small things mostly but they add up and make my eyes burn lol.
