1080 vs 980ti for WQHD(2560x1440)

Recommended Posts

I am very curious to know if and how much the performance advantage has an impact on FPS.

On high settings with maxed out visibility and 2xAA, my 980ti struggles around 24fps when I'm flying low and have both the TGP and MAV pages active in the left and right MFDs.

If anyone gets his hand on a custom 1080 with some 18xx boost clock(reference clock is bad for comparison because I have a 980 tI sc+),

I'd be happy if some impressions could be conveyed here.

So im currently running a 1440p monitor with a GTX780 and I never see framerates less than 30 fps, E4bpJg5.jpg

But what I'm wondering is...

this: http://www.ncix.com/detail/acer-xb280hk-bprz-28in-4k2k-ce-103792.htm

or this: http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-pg278q-rog-swift-27in-e5-100910.htm

also going to get a GTX1080 to use with the monitor...

I'm leaning towards the 1440p monitor, better panel, but im unsure if more resolution is better than a higher framerate and better screen, since both are gsync.

I'm currently running the latter.

The Gsync all the way up to 144Hz is nice, but not really needed most of the time.

Around 30-50fps is where Gsync really carries.

The former has 21:9 ratio, which is very good for Flightsims, but I'm not sure your 780 can handle the extra pixels.

Bare in mind that Gsync only starts at 30fps.

I don't plan on using either of them with my 780... going to buy the monitor in the same order as the 1080... so you think, then, the 4k monitor would be better? I'm unlikely to get under 30 fps with a 1080, even at 4k?

and they are both 16:9 monitors, first one is 3840 X 2160 60hz, other 2560x1440 144hz...

it's such a six of one, half a dozen of the other thing...

Apologies. For some reason I saw a 21:9 1440p monitor there.

I know that a 1080 can handle 4K quite well. DCS is, as we all know, not as GPU focused, though 2.0 Alpha is a different story.

The Benchmark sticky suggests that the performance hit from 1440p top 4K isn't that big, but I wouldnt bet on it when flying over forrests or very populated servers. Performance can be very errratic with DCS.

My rule of thumb is:

Upgrade GPU now (to 1080), there is still some stuff you can max out in your settings(water, draw distance, etc), which would make your current resolution very neat. And when 4K monitors drop in price further, say 1-2 years, migrate.

I'd rather have a higher constant framerate on 1440p than struggle with lower ones on 4K.

This is a benchmark for the upcoming 1080 with 4K resolution.

Take it with a grain of salt though. Those are all very GPU intense games, some of which run on DX12.

I agree, going with the 1440p display. Thanks.

Before yesterday I used a 780ti and had no problem staying above 60fps all maxed except vis. range on ultra @4xmsaa@1440p over vegas. It sounds like you are cpu bottlenecked already with your 980ti,what cpu do you have?

With the new gtx 1080 I run stable 100-144fps@8xmsaa@1440p with about 70% gpu utilization on the 4790K@4,7Ghz.

But I thought you already had one?

If you're getting a new monitor, get as much res as possible, or a 21:9 curved.

There is an acer model with Gsync, 1440p and 21:9, for the same price as the Asus ROG swift.

I run my 4790K@4,5GHz

Flying low over Kobuleti, with all the tiny towns and forests, I get ~25 fps.

Max settings, max draw distance, 2AA, high visibility, no lens effect.

the display i have now is IPS, a very slow display, but has good image quality...

what I want also is a fast monitor, or one with more resolution, or both... but i was unsure if more resolution was better than a better screen... I'm not too into the ultra-wide thing, if there was a PG278Q ultra-wide version, even if it cost more, i'd get it, also* im not willing to pay more for the 165hz versions...

Have something higher than 6700 and 980Ti? Planning to spend some money on good monitor? So spend some good money!!! :thumbup:lol. If you're getting GTX 1080 so get 3440x1440 at 21:9 or 4K. This is it. Simple. You always can downgrade resolution. Like rednecks like to say: "Buy a truck - one day you gonna need it" Choice is yours.:music_whistling:

Model number of that cheaper beauty please? All what I can find from Acer it's 34" beast for more than $1100 or you're talking about 2560 x 1440 not 3440x1440 right? please mention it. Deamn everything so dumb now, before one number 1080 mean everything - now double standards everywhere.

PG278Q is 900$ CDN, i have 1100 to spend, for my price limit, this seems to be the best choice, I'm unwilling to spend near 2000$ for a computer screen...

1080 vs 980ti for WQHD(2560x1440)

The low price was just for a day. After that it went back up again.

Also, downgrading resolution is not pretty.

I'd rather play 1080p on native res, than 1440p on a 4K.

Or 1440p on native.

On a side note, I played 4K for a few days before sending back the monitor and settling for 1440p, because back then, my 980 couldn't handle high fps on 4K.

I can honestly say that I don't miss it.

Again, the overall difference in picture quality isn't that great from 1440p to 2160p

I dare say that Nvidia DSR minimizes the difference even further.

But I guess people can debate this endlessly.

Just like some people get headaches from VR and others don't.

Some people see 30fps as choppy and others don't.

I for instance notice it instantly when a forest I fly over passes rather chopper or fluently.

Those microstutters every 4 seconds can be especially annoying.

So I just did a little test with Valley Benchmark. Maybe someone is interested in it, so I tagged all of you.

3440 x 1440

Difference as percentage:

Oh now it makes sense. Thanks for specs. Like I said in my previous post "or above". Otherwise I'm completely agree.

I personally will wait till this beast will cost normally: Acer Predator 34-inch Curved UltraWide QHD (3440 x 1440) NVIDIA G-Sync Widescreen Display

Anybody else knows UltraWide QHD in any 1440 with G-Sync?

ASUS sells them too, with highly similar specs.

I believe the actual screen is the same.

Only that the casing, bezel etc, are different.

Pricing is similar too, with ASUS being slightly more expensive.

I can say that my well overclocked 1080 is not that much better than my well overclocked 980ti. 10-15% at best and only in some games. 0% better in VR or nvidia surround in DCS. I'm a little disappointed to be honest with you.

If you still have your 980ti, would you be so kind as to run a benchmark, first with the 980ti, then the 1080.

Just take a standard 2 minute DCS track and use FRAPS.

It would be very much aprecciated.

Both OCed at your discretion.

You may yet be the only dude I know that has his hands on both with a similar PC setup.

Actually, if you could just run a 2 minute FRAPS benchmark with this track and post the min/max/avg fps, that would be truly awesome.

Edit: my graphicsw setup is seen in the screenshot. I hope you can run at 1440p :D

Alternatively, you can run it on a single 1080p monitor(I believe your monitors are 1080p native each) and I'll do the same. Then we can compare.

There must be something bad with your DCS installation. Even though I run at 1080p I never went below 50 fps with my 980ti. Maxed settings with 2AA also.

The only time when I got to around 20 fps was in corrupted missions that were re-saved from old versions.

Do, or do not, there is no try.
