There are two different way how this can work.

 

On F-5E aircraft (our version): "automatic strut dehike occurs anytime aircraft weight

is off the main gear, regardless of the position of the gear lever"

 

On some other modifications: "strut dehike will occur with aircraft weight

off the main gear and the gear lever in the up position"

 

So, you probably saw takeoff of other modifications :music_whistling:
