Hello,

I would like to ask for help in regard to what options I should set for the USB settings in the UEFI BIOS.

I have BIOS 3101 and I just updated the USB 3.0 drivers for both Intel and ASMedia.

I use some device for gaming....like the Thrustmaster Warthog, the CH Products Eclipe Yoke and Rudder Pro Pedals..

It happen that sometime if I left connected one of these devices (not always the same and/or in the same port), next time I turn on the PC, it dosent boot....it hang...

The only option to turn on the PC normally is to remove the device, press the Clear CMOS on the back panel, enter the UEFI BIOS and reset all the parameters..

I dont want to always connect the device I want before playing...

These are the options that I have right now: (I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit)

ADVANCED: "USB Configuration" menu:

-Intel xHCI Mode: AUTO

-EHCI Legacy Support: ENABLED

-xHCI Hand Off: ENABLED

-EHCI Hand Off: DISABLED

"USB Single Ports Control":

-all the ports are enabled

BOOT menu:

-USB Support: PARTIAL INITIALISATION

Anybody with the same MB can suggest me what are the best settings ?

Thank you very much.

Well, from what I know and saw the measure that Asus recommended to one guy that has his story on YT was to set the USB detection in Bios to Quick and not let it initialise all devices upon boot as that would cause many if those said X99 USB problems. According to that guy and vid it works. He had like 3 X99 boards and each one had the same issue, none of the boards was faulty, just a bad way booting USB. He runs an Asus X99 with an 5950 CPU and allo almost everything maxed out for video editing. If I find the vid again I will post the link. very informatve vid as he tried many things that didnt help etc.. things you can skip

I have an Asus X99 WS IPMI on my bench and till now it doesnt show any of those symptoms but I only have a logitech mouse/kb wireless adapter in the backport USB. The board has booted fine on every boot it did but its brand new and runs SRV2008R2 with a naturally sleek approach.

I will post any X99USB findings in this subforum, be assured ;)

Right now I am fighting MSI...LoL...what a board....Love Asus

Thank you very much !!

Could you explain what you mean by *quick* on detection ?

Basically there are two options that could be modified in that regard :

In the Boot Menu:

-Partial Initialisation : the option I have now

-Enabled

-Disabled

And in the ADVANCED Menu:

Intel xHCI Mode :

-Auto : the option I have now

-SmartAuto

-Enabled

-Disabled

Which one you think is the one to change ?

I know from what I have read on the net that the ASMedia USB 3.0 controller has a lot of issues... while Intel USB 3.0 is fine.

Unfortunately on my MB the Intel USB 3 ports are the one on the front panel...not very useful if you have a headset, mouse, usb pen drive, joysticks, throttle, etc...

I will subscribe to this thread so if you find the videos I will take a close look.

Thank you very much

It's in BIOS, usually under PERIPHERALS or USB section itself if you have one in Bios. look through all the sections regarding USB and one will ask you how you want it initialised while booting, you want NONE aka DISABLED and pass it all over to Windows to load any USB driver.

Mind you, before you do that, either take out your password to log in so it automatically loads the desktop or have a PS2 keyboard ready as it might be upon first boot that it wont know the drivers for keyboard, which will get loaded ONCE you logged in but not before. this is an old bug haunting those sceanrios...and boards with a PS2 connector have a clear advantage there. You can have both connected same time ( PS2 and USB keyb. ) but PS2 needs to be pkugged in priot to booting the board.

Send me a link to your manual if you are not sure what it is, I will point it out for you.

I set it to DISABLED, and restarted the PC 3-4 times.

No more freeze or hang up for the moment !

Thank you very much BitMaster !!

Let's hope it is for good !!

P.S: On the ROG forum the answer I got was to remove the devices.... I dont know what you guys playing Air sims do usually...but I dont think there is a lot of people that keep connect and disconnect the various joysticks and throttles, trackIr, etc... and I dont think it should be something that should be done in the year 2016. :)

I might be one of the weird guys that does actually pull out his flight peripherals (I was going to say joystick, but that got weirdly sexual) when I'm done. Stick, throttle and pedals are in a USB hub connected to a front USB port in my case, so it's easy. I do keep my trackir connected though.

BitMaster, who is YT ?

fixen: I see your point, mine are all connected on the back panel, and is not very practical to connect and remove everytimes all the devices...its something that a 2016 hardware/software PC should be able to handle without problems...but apparently on the latest chipsets ( X99, Z170, etc) its still buggy...

I have not yet found a clear explanation on what every voice in the UEFI bios mean ( what option do what, and when to set it that way..)

YT is YouTube :)

MAYBE the reason why my stupid MSI Diva-acting board has the same startup problems....

It sometimes happens..sometimes not....actually I will try the same on mine when I find the time, currently covered in work and family business and all I can do for DCS is this forum, havent flown a minute last 2 weeks.

:) Youtube !

I didnt tought about checking there !

My board did the same thing...sometime good sometime it hang up during the boot....

I dont think its a MB brand or chipset kind of problem.. I think its more likely to be a USB chipset problem.

Dont know if you already know this site, but it is very interesting and it has a lot of helping tools and suggestions

I just bought Thrustmaster Warthog, and I have spent like a week trying to figure out how to mount and setting up all the profiles for all the games... a very time consuming job !!!

Oh heck it is !!!!! WHENEVER they release an update that voids controls I am frustrated as I own so many modules that it takes AGES to redo them all.....and if you keep the old config file..never seemed to work as intended for me...so I do a SCRATCH-ALL-OVER-AGAIN..LoL.

The downside of Hotas and many modules/games.

I will look up and read your links, just very limited time these days...no time for anything but family and some little forum help where I can and when I can.

Yes, this Bios is cumbersome....it's in default now and ALL usb are being used...no problem now..but ask me tomorrow and it might 180° different....but I think I keep this board as I dont have the time. If all goes good this rig will go to my son in a few months and daddy goes for a Z299 soon...sick and tired of MSI.

I have been reading up the links you provided and installing 2 newer drivers than offered by MSI for this board. ASmedia 3.1 and Intel 3.0 ( modded ) to see if that helps to cure the sporadic refuse to boot from cold...

oooops..The modded Intel 3.0 extens.H.C. just gave me a "THREAD EXCEPTION.."warning while booting...booted a few times into this error and then self-repaired it to previous state eyeeeee..LOL

So...only the ASmedia wanted to be updated, the other refuses the new modded driver.

Intel Auto-Update tool also says there is no newer driver for my board for any device.

Time will tell if the newer ASmedia driver will do some good.

and yes...do not install them with Mouse/Kb connected on those, use RDP..VNC or another Controller for the devices...but this is common for installing USB drivers in certain scenarios.

You wont be able to click "FINISH" or "REBOOT" etc..and would be left with PowerButton options only without closing the installer the proper way...may work..may cause issue...use the above and on site mentioned alternatives.

There is one chance that KB3206632 caused the issue as I could not reboot or shutdown in above scenario without applying said update...sad.

I install the update now seperately and may try the modded driver again to see which one caused the error. Canot tell which one for sure now, chances are there either one caused it.

OK, it must have been the kb update from MS combined with the driver. The 2 drivers now show up as indicated ( incl. PCI-Express_Root_Complex that had to be fitted with the new switch driver ).

The ASMedia device now shows more devices with new names....lets see

BUT..!!

THIS will not in any way fix a booting issue me idiot :) was a bit confused when saying that.

No driver, regardless what OS and make and vendor, will ever fix a "I dont wanna boot" issue, unless it also flashes some firmware ( which does not happen while doing this above ), that much to this topic.

Still, having the most up-2-date drivers for such rather new devices makes me feel better.

A day without an update is BOOOOORING :)

lets see what it brings

Basically I think its the USB chipset that is f****d.

All this wothless USB options on the UEFI...and they cant even provide a fully functional chipset....

Yeah, my MSI diva like acting board acts up again in the worst manner, it is for non-overclockers and as a show-off unpowered display ONLY ..IMHO

I talked to my dealer ( its a B2B thing ) and I told them I do not really want to go thru 2 replacements just finding out the 9% return rate of this specific board ha sa reason.

If 9% return it, more than double have problems as only a minority ever claim that, makes me believe this is a BAD BOARD by definition.

They will look into it once I took it out and sent it back and will most likely refund me so I can buy my desired Asus Maximus Formula VIII on amazon.

If that just acts the same way, then I dunno.

Last REAL GOOD ERROR FREE CHIPSET was Intel 440BX , no kiddin.

That chipset was used for years and years as a virtual chipset in any VMware, for a good reason.

Ever since, too new, too fast moving product cycles and features over stability, shame on that approach of marketing.

If all goes well I will throw this whole thing out of the window into my sons hands and get me an AMD, just to freakin not use Intel anymore until they learn...and get a Vega and Freesync as well, my son loves my screen.

This whole story that we share would not need to be IF intel was a bit slower and more precise now that they dont get faster that is the least we could ask for.

Spent a whole month trying to get this board just booting stable and it just WON'T.

If it wont boot reliably, of what use is it ? ZERO !!! --> /dev/null
