bushido Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 It's more a generic question rather than one dedicated to the F5 but because in the training mission it is mentioned than we should uncage the heatseeker of the sidewinder before shooting in order to have a better chance to kill I was wondering how it works in real life ?
grunf Posted January 5, 2017 Posted January 5, 2017 When it's caged, the seeker looks directly ahead. Uncaging it after it gets a lock, you can point the plane away from the target, while the seeker continues to track it. That way you can take a leading shot.
Svend_Dellepude Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 The downside of uncaging is that if you have another heatsource close to your target it seems that it can hijack the seeker when it's still on the rail, and you will probably miss. Had this happen a few times. At least I think that is what happened. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Win10 64, Asus Maximus VIII Formula, i5 6600K, Geforce 980 GTX Ti, 32 GB Ram, Samsung EVO SSD.
