We always hear about the monster upgrades so how about a budget upgrade ;) .

I got my 7600GT a couple of weeks ago and I have to say I’m really impressed with the overall performance for what I paid for the card; here’s my settings… and this is with 4x AA / 2x AF.

Here’s some in game screen shots.

I’m still pretty much testing settings to see what will give the best FPS but the most disappointing thing is the fact that I found it impossible to find a set of general settings that could produce high FPS all the time. The only problem areas are over any part of the map where the terrain is flat when running good weather with the general visibility maxed out. Under those conditions I can see as low as 15 to 20 over cities; however once I add overcast clouds my FPS increases dramatically. Over hills, mountains and through valleys, regardless of visibility, I experience high FPS with an average of about 30 to 35 in cockpit however it’s over the sea where my FPS really takes off and in cockpit I can average 60 with water on High.

One thing I found surprising when trying to compensate for low fps over cities is that when I set 2X AA and turned off AF I didn’t see any increase in FPS what so ever although I could clearly see the reduced in quality in game. So after taking the screen shots above I started turning things up and now I’m running 4x AA, 8x AF and I’ve set shadows to “All Planar” with the result showing no decrease in FPS on the tracks I’ve tested it on.

A little OT but I finished Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter last weekend with all the settings maxed out (medium was the highest for texture quality) except for in game texture filtering where I set that to tri linear from the default 8X and I had complete butter smooth game play through out the entire campaign.

I did consider a complete upgrade but I don’t think the increase in speed would be high enough to justify the expense right now so this will hopefully extend the life of my PC for another year and a bit.. I hope ;) . Anyway for a budget upgrade I’m more than happy with the results and for me Lockon looks like a completely different flightsim compared to the settings I use to run.

Glad to hear you got those type of results! What are your specs and what did you previously upgrade from?

You should be able to put shadows to full.

I have a 6800GT 256MB and am running your exact settings, but with the addition of Shadows on full, a resolution of 1280x1024, and 4xAA and 4xAF.

NV card settings

One trick I've learned from nV cards is set the AA @ 2XQ instead of 4XAA.

2XQ is equivilant to 4XAA but higher frame rates.

I am running a nV 6800GT AGP and I use 2XQAA and 8XAF

Also Vertical sync_ ON and Triple buffering_ ON.

Set Neg LOD_ CLAMP

Everything else, all the optimizations_ OFF.

Set card Image setting @_ High Quality

You will be able to run with 100KM pre-laod and High Vis Range.

Also like Disso says above you should be operate shadows_ full

Use LOCFG to set clip ranges and objects density to medium settings.

Also use FC GUI configurator 1.3.0 to set fog multiplier and shadow density to 0.40 each.

I am going to get me one of them cards also, soon as I get my hands on some undesignated cash.

Best Regards,

Cosmonault, install Canopy with no scratches.zip from lockonfiles will give you better fps in cockpit, it'll remove all scratches and may double fps in all plane's cockpit only

I don't like the look of the canopy without scatches. Everytime I look into the sunset from within, and see the canopy glinting in the light with the scratches here and there, I can't help but awe at Lockon's beauty. I never had a problem with frames within the cockpit anyway.

My old card was a GF3 Ti 200 128mb and my system: AMD Athlon 3.0 GHz with 1 gig of ram.

Yep you were right shadow set to full had no impact on FPS and I’m now running 16X AF with no drop in FPS either. I do think that 8x AF looks better though but I'll check out a few other sims and games before I decide which one to leave it on.

christopher m, thx for the info I’ll try the settings you suggested, right now I’m not running any fps tweaks what so ever as I just wanted to see how the card handled the sim as stock but over densely rendered cities I would like to see more stability in my FPS with the settings I’m running. As for the 2xQ, well for me there isn’t any drop in FPS from 2Q to 4 and 4x aa looks better incockpit for sure.

I agree 100% with Disso regarding the cockpit reflections, they don’t pose a threat to my fps and the cockpit looks naked with out them ;) .

eesh..that is quite a jump indeed! A GF3! I always assumed you were at least in the ATI9800 crowd. ;)

8X AA huh? Seems a bit high, I havent tried it yet, but I think that would cause a tad of a slowdown for me. 4XAA gets rid of all of the noticable jaggies for me. I've never ran any of those FPS mods, LOMAC is surprisingly FPS friendly for what it is.

LOL I know I should have said “I’m a shamed to say a GF3” ;) hehe on low settings it wasn’t that bad although FC made things very difficult at times.

8x AA? I run 4x AA and 8 or 16x AF.
