I love both, but the MiG is more capable. Between the rockets, bombs, air to ground missiles, and BVR capability, the MiG shines above the F-5 as a multi-role aircraft. The F-5 has nicer radar, and it is better in a close in dogfight. The F-5 also has the ease of use factor, but this stems largely from simplicity. I love they way the it flies, and it is clear why it has been used as an aggressor so much, but it is also clear why the US mostly used them as trainers or export aircraft, and used the F-4 and others as their mainline aircraft. In DCS, both are modeled fantastically by their respective developers, and I love both.

i disagree

the F5 is still a good fighter bomber (arguably better) due to larger ordinance carry capacity. Id say its impressive given the F5's small size (smaller than Mig) Minus Kh66 Grom beam guided missiles, the Mig21 primarily reiles on unguided ordinance anyhow.

besides atm Mig21 is kinda brokenish, especially if you ask some of the true mig fans.

No USAf just liked expnesive toys. It wasnt until the Fighter mafia influenced Aircraft desin, and the rising costs of next gen Aicraft like the F15 when the Airforce finally woke up and realized they needed lighter and more inexpensive airframes to augment thier fleets. IE hece the "High Low" adoption mix OF the F16 as a primary workhorse to augment Air superiority and more expensive airframes like the F15.

Thats exactly why the F5 sold so well back in its day. For nations would didnt have enough F4s, ( or coudlnt outright afford them) and or simply had modest defence needs and F5 fit it good enough anyhow, without nthe need to overspend for a premium grade aircraft like the F4 phantom.

also keep in mind as a export product norhrop was very flexible to meet countries needs and they could easily have additional features added (were talking 70-80 legacy, 21st centruy modernization), FWhilst what we have is the akin to basic/standard configuration which is what the agressors used, there Were F5s that were fitted with external refuel probes, a Dual radar/tv screen display variant of the AN/ApQ 159 radar ( think it was V 1/2) for maverick capability for example, are some of the more commonly known additions given for export F5E's

Anyways similarily MIg21 outlasted, and was more dominant in export even after the Mig23 was avialable for export simply because it was cheaper to buy, simpler to operate and easier to maintain.

Mig-21Bis is good multi-role for the time, but it just ain't such a dogfighter mainly because limited view to rear and even to front.

Sure it doesn't carry such bomb load, but that is the thing with cheaper aircraft and anyways the doctrines that you simply send more aircrafts for the mission than try to load few to full weight.

The current mig is just... Odd. I don't know what is the status for flight modeling as it has changed so much between different updates and still i have heard there is missing the realistic weapons panel functionality where the switches only set preference for missile types or pylons, but computer fires the correct ones if there aint such that pilot asks.

The main weakness i would say is the SPO-10 as now we dont have GCI that would deliver a overall picture as well as a second wingman even in a dogfight. And that helps to avoid the problems with rear view as well.

But considering how quickly one can get Mig up in the air and complete the task and even prepare for different kinds.... It is amazing.

Take a friend to play GCI and Mig is totally another kind beast as someone plots the flight for you. A doctrine that was totally superior to what west had.

And what comes to air combat, we are so unlucky that we are still in the air quake level where everyone just tries to get down.

So lets see what the new team with mig comes up.

So far I take F-5 or even Hawk up in the air... (Remeber, even Hawks has shot down F-15C pilots in a dogfight in recent red flag exercise)

Yes and?

agressor F16s scored 1 kill agasint an F35A. at the loss of 15.

that doesnt prove superiority of the older platform.

besides Hawk is also one of those aircraft that is still buggy. L39 is a much sweeter ride just because state the hawks in.
