vortexringstate Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 I have a rotary encoder with a push button function. I would like to somehow set it up so I can use the same encoder to tune Radio freqs, turn Heading bugs, make any other 'dial type' selections eg:L/R or UP down... I plan to set up voice attack so if I say "ADF" I can then use the encoder to tune. Same for "FM" "VHF" or Weapon selections Do you think this would be possible? Sokol1_br Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Connect that encoder in a USB controller like this: http://www.derekspearedesigns.com/32-button-no-matrix-controller.html
Brewnix Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Hello, so the Rotary encoder acts like a intermittent button press. So you definitely can use to adjust the Frequency on the radio or anything that can be assigned as a button press. I can't comment on voice attack if i need to stack encoders with multi functions i use modifiers. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
vortexringstate Posted March 13, 2017 Author Posted March 13, 2017 Connect that encoder in a USB controller like this: http://www.derekspearedesigns.com/32-button-no-matrix-controller.html Thanks,, sorry I wasnt very clear...I know how to connect it and have a card. It is the button assignment I need help with. I am not sure how to get the thing working as I describe- if it can be done (one encoder used for several uses??) Sokol1_br Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 (edited) A encoder is seen by Windows/Games as 2 button - 1 for turn left, 1 for turn right, plus 1 more for the center press. DCSW controls don't allow you use a given button for more than one function, but using the "Switches" function in the 3rd button (press) you can use the other 2 buttons in 2 different commands each. Theoretically using a keymapper, e.g. Joy2Key you can set various "layers" (up to 16) for that 2 buttons, and use the 3rd button for select the layers, in each the 2 buttons press different keys, this require select layers in sequential way, e.g. Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 3... "rinse and repeat". But this don't provide a way to know what layer are selected at given moment. Edited March 13, 2017 by Sokol1_br

Because I have yet to get Voice activation going, Im ASSUMING I could use that to effectively map those 'Layers' under various calls. ie VHF...? <hopefully>! Yes, you can use VoiceAttack to actuate "SWITCHES" in DCS but a SWITCH has to be toggled off in order to apply another one. The problem, as has been already stated, is that there is no reliable way to know which if any SWITCH is on. A button box that has ON-OFF-ON switches can be programed so that both ON poles have the same output. This way you can tell if a SWITCH is active by the position of the toggle bar.
