Bearfoot Posted April 5, 2017 Posted April 5, 2017 Thanks to the kindness of other folks sharing their wisdom on another thread, I am now looking into upgrading my 980Ti to a 1080Ti. It was recommended that I get a Founders Edition (FE). I am wondering what the advantages/disadvantages would be over this one: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GAMING OC 11GB Video Card https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125955 For my newbie/naive eyes, I see 3 fans instead of 1. And, of course, factory-overclocked. One of the comments says that it uses 8-pin + 6-pin instead of 8/8, thus maybe limiting its home overclock potential?
Demon_ Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 (edited) It was recommended that I get a Founders Edition (FE). Who said that? And why? The trick: Look for the one with the highest engine clock (Boost Clock). As 3 heads are better than one, 3 fans are better than one. Edited April 6, 2017 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
Bearfoot Posted April 6, 2017 Author Posted April 6, 2017 Who said that? And why? BitMaster did here: https://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=3096853&postcount=5 . I think the idea was that the air-cooling would be sufficient till I decide to water-cool? The trick: Look for the one with the highest engine clock (Boost Clock). The Gigabyte card has a Boost clock of 1657, while the founders edition (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814137104&cm_re=1080ti_fe-_-14-137-104-_-Product) has a boost clock of 1582. Curiously, both the same price ...
Demon_ Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 I think the idea was that the air-cooling would be sufficient till I decide to water-cool? Because they were the only one available at that time. And the less expensive to modify (on water). Curiously, both the same price ... It's a question of production cost and inventory. Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
Demon_ Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 (edited) This one has more overclocking ability (8+2 power phases): http://ca.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N108TGAMING-OC-11G#kf (7-phase dualIFET power supply): http://ca.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N108TD5X-B#kf The GTX 1080Ti is very powerful. You don't need to spend money to overclock (aftermarket cooler) more than the factory one. Edited April 6, 2017 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
Bearfoot Posted April 6, 2017 Author Posted April 6, 2017 Thanks! It looks like this Gigabyte "Gaming OC" might be my choice, then!
=Pedro= Posted April 6, 2017 Posted April 6, 2017 I think that 1080 will do for DCS as long as you don't use 4k monitor. Gigabyte Z390 Gaming X | i7 9700K@5.0GHz | Asus TUF OC RTX 4090 | 32GB DDR4@3200MHz | HP Reverb G2 | TrackIR 5 | TM Warthog HOTAS | MFG Croswinds
