Hints on campaign mission 5 (destroy convoy at ambush point)?

Just failed for the 7th or 8th time. I manage to get to the observation point (which is WP9 and not WP8 as written in the mission briefing - had to open the miz to find that out because I never found the convoy on WP8) most of the time.

So in my last attempt, I finally found the correct road and took the shot. It was said to take out the radio truck first and then the AA. But isn't the AA the bigger thread? Anyway, for whatever reason my first shot anyway missed and soon after, the convoy was "out of sight". And there's the problem. If I go closer or higher, the AA of course then starts firing at me and there's no way to me to give a proper shot anymore.

So what's the correct approach to achieve this mission? From the ambush point, you only have sight to a small part of the road (unless you go higher which seems no option).

And once I'd get after that point - how to navigate back? You can only save 9 WP. Do I have to manually enter the new ones or do you navigate on sight and with the kneeboard?

The best approach is to do not miss your target ;)

Once AAA and radio truck are destroyed, ask meatboy to end the convoy. Then follow you pdf flight plan.

Keep in mind that this campaign was made for relatively already trained pilots. It's not the hardest thing you may have to achieve, but nothing has been done to make your task easy.

Haha, good point. But seriously, there's no way to make the time window bigger (better location)? So it's really hit the AAA or it's over?

Thanks for pointing out the pdf. I didn't notice that there's a detailed campaign pdf in the doc folder before you mentioned it.

Yeah, my flying time with the Gazelle isn't that high yet, but I thought the best way to learn it is to simply do the campaign.

BTW, for the flight below 10m - do you use altitude hold autopilot or not? I almost felt more confortable without the autopilot because if you make a direction change, the Gazelle anyway might go up a few meters and with the autopilot on, it will stay on the new altitude which might be above 10m.

Fully manual flight.

Yes I took the time to type this fu**¨pdf that no one reads

You have to fly as fast as possible, convoy appears on the portion of the road around 22 if I do well remember. Best is to be there around 15 so you just sit there and wait. There is a Mi-8 before him.

Well, how can you read it when you don't know that it exists? :-/ Maybe it would have been nice to have a hint in the in-game briefing (more details in the pdf documentation). I did not even check the doc folder for the manuals because I downloaded Chuck's guide and because I was watching video tutorials to learn the Gazelle. But since I know that there's the pdf, I'll of course consult it before the mission.

The speed isn't the problem. I flew around 200kmh and I'm there early enough. But from the ambush point, I only see a small part of the road. That's why the time window is so small. Anyway, I'll give it another try later on.

Seriously or kidding? I just read through the campaign text again and I didn't see a note on a pdf documenation. At least I finally managed to ambush the convoy for the first time (don't ask me which attempt it was...I don't count anymore).

Unfortunately, I was taken down around WP20 - or maybe I hit the ground when I tried to escape the shells. It's really challenging to stay very low there because it's not flat. Maybe I took a slight wrong route after WP18 because I went through the village (Odishi). Accordig to the pdf and the miz, I should have stayed a few meters more to the north. But I doubt it would have made a huge difference because there also wouldn't have been any cover.

It was quite hard to not making that close to the end of the mission...well, better luck next time (hopefully).

Again, it was made to be challenging ;) I hope there wasn't a mistake on the english version where the pdf reminder was removed :s

The 5th mission caused many beta testers to die. I already had 2 000 hours on the Kamov-50 when I made it, and I used to lead patrols up to 10 players so I made a campaign that I judged hard enough for a mid-class helicopter student ;) Let's say that on a scale from 1 to 10, it's 6 average, and 8 for some.

The interesting part of the campaign is that it may teach you reflexes on how using the gazelle, flying low, staying mobile, and about the tactical situation. In your case (mais on peut peut-être parler français vu que je vois que t'es suisse), you chose the harsh way by learning the helicopter from the beginning with the campaign.

Well technically I don't see better (and more punishing) training so go on and keep trying. There are twelve missions, the hardest IMO are the 5th, the 9th and the 11th. It doesn't mean that remaining ones are easy. You can be sure that you will be far better once having finished them than before starting ;)

Thanks for the reply. I did a copy/paste of the campaign text of the mission (attached). Maybe I'm really blind but IMO it's missing in the english version (did a search for pdf and doc).

It's no cristism that it's challenging. It even says that it includes a challenging campaign on the ED page. But of course it can become slightly frustrating if you have to redo the first part over and over again. But yeah, nobody told me to learn the Gazelle the hard way. Overall I'm sure it will increase my skills - it was the same with the Huey/Argo campaign. To me, it feels like a 8 actually ;-)

Just a short question about the low level flight. I use the trim (10x forward) which gives me a speed around 200. When you notice you slightly lose altitude, do you give slightly more collective or do you slightly pull back the stick to gain a few meters of altitude? Or does it depend on the situation.

My french isn't that good because I didn't use it for ages (Je m'excuse, mais je suis suisse-allemand).

The good thing is that I get quite something out of my money because I have to try it that often. It gives me some extra hour with the Gazelle.

Well, I rounded up the numbers - I was more flying around 190, so I'm not overtorquing it. Over sea, I prefered working with the collective, but above ground, it was a mixture of both, especially when flying a corner.

Either way...just finished the mission :-) But I almost threw it away when flying back and getting too much into the south (too close to Sukhumi), close to the ZSU. I probably was attracted by the fire fight down there.

Coincidentally I'm also on mission 5, but just wanted to jump on and say - GREAT PDF! More seriously, I found myself speeding across the ocean the other night, under 10m, with night vision on and thought that was freakin cool; so thank you! Looking forward to what you come up with for the L and the Mistral at some point.

Well, waiting for a new thread for the sixth mission then :D

Sorry to disappoint you, but I managed mission 6 w/o starting a new thread ;-) I must say, I did not participate that much though - Meatboy-1 did most of the dirty work. It seems like I was more a distant observer.

And like Patersonski already said, the pdf is very well done (helpfull to know what to do).
