All,

On request, I'm doing some Viggen skins using the F-4 3-tone Hill paint scheme as shown here:

I know that there is also a more prevalent 2-tone Hill paint scheme, though the shape of the Viggen doesn't lend itself to that. This is why I'm doing the 3-tone.

I have two questions:

  1. Which scheme is Hill 1 and which is Hill 2? Or is the 3-tone called something entirely different (I've seen Egypt One referenced as well)?
  2. What is the Federal Standard color used for the Roundels? Closest I can see is FS36495 Light Grey.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I've been working on skins for the AI F-4E and have been using guides such as this for reference:

They list "Hill 1" or what I know as Euro Gray here:

https://www.cybermodeler.com/aircraft/f-4/f-4_profile04.shtml

The closest I found to what you were doing was a Marine F-4S profile:

I've personally have not seen reference or seen any real photos of a 3-tone gray scheme on the F-4, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I hope any of this points you in the right direction

Thanks, Sport, and sorry for the late reply.

I do know of the F-4S paintscheme, as I have used it for my USN/USMC Viggen skins (see my signature). I was just hoping that there was some more information on the 3-tone Hill pattern.

The only things I could find (aside from that graphic) were a comment about there being 2 Hill grey patterns (one of them being 3-tone), and the assertion that the Hawaii ANG used the 3-tone pattern for the F-4s at Hickam AFB.

Thanks for the assist.

Edit: here's an early render of the 81st TFS using the 3-tone skin (underside is light compass grey).
