Hey,

As hinted at by the title of this message, I'd like to see multiplayer missions supporting tooltips on an individual basis, based purely on their client settings...

As far as I understand, based on extensive testing in both SP and MP, this is how the tooltip system works at the moment:

- Players can enable/disable tooltips in the option menu of their DCS client;

- Missions can force tooltips on/off, but don't have to use that option;

- Servers can force tooltips on/off, but don't have to use that option.

Say I log into a multiplayer mission that doesn't enforce tooltips on or off either way, and I have tooltips disabled in my client option menu:

- I have no tooltips as long as I am the only one online;

- A 2nd player logs in who has tooltips disabled on their client: nothing changes, neither player has tooltips in the multiplayer mission;

- A 3rd person logs in, who has tooltips enabled on their client: suddenly tooltips are turned on for everyone on that server.

I find tooltips quite annoying and intrusive. They are very useful when learning a new module, but otherwise I leave them off on my client, but still have them on in MP since I never seem to be on a server with people who all have them off as well.

I would like the server to use the individual client settings, so that people who want tooltips can have them, but they are not forced upon people who don't want them as soon as 1 or more others have them enabled.

Is that something that wouldn't be too hard to implement?

Thanks!

If the behavior is as you describe that is surely a bug. The difficulty the end user sees should not change with the addition of other multiplayer clients.

The design of the difficulty settings is a hierarchical layered preference model. The layers in order of descending priority are:

1. Host

2. Mission

3. User

For the user preference to be considered the Host+Mission must not enforce a particular setting. The the mission preference to be considered the host must not have set "Use these settings for all missions". The the case of single player the user is the host and the client.

Unfortunately I believe many or most hosts enforce their personal difficulty settings over the missions in order not to have to contend with different missions having different difficulty settings (esp. when playing single player as there is no DS app). The result being that every personal preference is also overridden for all clients.

Our squadron has its own dedicated server, so the issue of hosts overriding personal preferences doesn't apply there.
