there is a command to tell my wingman ' cover me '.

what does that do ?

It tells him to attack any aircraft attempting to attack you. Not sure of the exact parameters involved but that basically is what it tell him to do. At one time it seemed that he would attack any aircraft trying to get behind you. Not sure if that's still the case.
