Zulu Posted December 5, 2017 Posted December 5, 2017 Now that we have the Harrier, does anyone have resources on how the US would carry out an amphibious landing? I'm looking specifically at where and how the ships would be deployed. Are the LHA's assigned an airwing depending on their mission, ie Mainly choppers embarked on one that sits just off shore for the landing operation and another further off with a mainly Harrier air wing? How far away would a carrier be from the action? Would their be destroyers/frigates/cruisers close in shore to provide gunnery support? To INVENT an Airplane is Nothing. To BUILD One is Something. But to FLYis EVERYTHING. - Otto Lilienthal [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
catt42 Posted December 5, 2017 Posted December 5, 2017 There's no easy answer, because, as you might understand, we're talking about very complex activities that involve coordination of air, sea and land operations. Anyway, you can start from these readings : https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_air-ground_task_force https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expeditionary_Strike_Group https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_expeditionary_unit https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aviation_combat_element
